The hottest day of whole summer. Of course, that is the day the Prinsengrachtconcert is planned. It is a feast of music, wobbling boats and beautiful sounds over the canals where once my mother, grandmother and grandfather lived, close to the old Wester church, where the Anne Frank house is. There lived my mother, blond and arisch, but Anne Frank was a Jew who had to hide for the nazi’s. A musical happening like that, on such a special place, I had to be there with my fan, knitting and bangeling my bare feet over the walls of the canals, on an in my opinion promient place. A lovely woman sitting next to me offered me a Prosecco which tasted so good with my meal from a nearby groceryshop, my day was top!

What happens when you love books as well as knitting? Your house is filled with knitting books in no time. And again I’ve got a very nice one that I am eager to tell you about, namely Portugese Style of Knitting by Andrea Wong. Our ex-students of the course Het Betere Breiwerk (Advanced Knitting course) already know the technique with the yarn through a pin at the shoulder or around the neck, because in this course for advanced knitters we deliberately teach the students all kinds of knitting methods to have them discover more about their own knitting method and the ways to perfect it. In Andrea’s book there is a lot of information about the history of this way of knitting in Portugal, about traditions and, of course, loads of information about the technique. With lots of clear pictures the cast-ons, the most commonly used stitches and the cast-offs are explained in detail. For me this is the most important part of the book, but the patterns in the last part of the book are very nice as well. Especially the mittens with the little Portugese rooster!

By the way…if you want to learn the technique hands-on, you can enter our waiting list for Het Betere Breiwerk (Advanced Knitting course) by sending an email to info@thedutchknitters.nl

Geef haar ongelijk…  All You Knit is Love was gelukkig wel open.

“I can’t imagine that anyone wants to knit here”, I thought when walking through Barcelona with more that 30 degrees C. But when you are really into knitting and you go to such a warm place, you first pack your knittings, then you print a list of the local yarn shops and at all that is done you consider what else to put in your suitcase. The photo of the closed shop is yarn shop Barcelana. This shop is probably of someone who had the opinion that it was too hot to knit while it was that hot. Well, I can understand that… All You Knit is Love fortunately was open. Such a nice shop! A cool spacious room in one of my favorite neighbourhoods near Princess street, a friendly owner and enough nice yarn to keep you knitting for years.

In the same street as All You Knit is Love I found atelier Jabberwocky with all handmade clothes. Mostly made on the knitting machine, some by hand, but all were made with a lot of love and care. They even tried the knitted bikini! Who remenbers the knitted and crocheted bikini’s that grew two sizes and the bikini knickers that ended up on your knees when you came out of the swimming pool?

But that was all about knitting in Barcelona. In the Mercats (small shops that sell  food and anything needed in the household) I found sometimes a pathetic pile of crochet yarn, in some window displays I discovered some felted objects and some hair dressers sold hair extensions that could be spun into nice yarns. Did I knit a lot myself? Hmm, two centimeters on a sock.

Barcelona Spain is an explosion of colour. And very hot. All eight days that we stayed there it was between 25 and 32 degrees C. But despite the heat it was good living in Barcelona, where you can eat fruit, icecream, wine, Estrella beer and tapas. The food market Boqueria near the Ramblas was an overwhelming experience with great views, smells and colours. The Sagrada Familia, very near our apartment, is on the outside mainly gray, but inside a abondance of light that come in through the stained glass windows and covers the cathedrale in spots of colour. Gaudi, the architect of the cathedrale, was good when colour was concerned. He designed the fairy tail buildings, the mozaïk bench and the colourfull salamander in the Quell Parc. This salamander is the symbol of Barcelona. The small streets seem the be dark, but that way the plants on the balcony and the drying landry in bright colours stand out even better. The Spanish people love to keep everything as clean as possible. In the textil museum, where we visited a very well composed exhibition on the influence of the history in the silhouet of the fashion today, we also saw the ceramic department in another part of the idyllic building. Many tiles inspire to design knitting motifs.

In the small streets you find shops which sell only ballet shoes, nougat in bright colours, toys or party articles. Clothes are extremely cheap in Barcelona, possibly due to the crisis. I bought linen shawls for five euros, a dress of ten euros and a skirt with swiss cheese plant motifs for 7,45 euros. Fans can ben bought in all kind of materials and with all the colours of the rainbow. They come in handy with the hot temperatures, especially for ladies of my age of older. You can also use them to cover your face for the sunlight. On the old cemetaries it is very hot, so real flowers will last no longer as half an hour, but artificial flowers will show for a longer time how much the family and friends loved the deceased.

Back in the Netherlands it is still summer. I miss the colours of Barcelona and have a graving for colour. I’m so bored with my dull black and whits Sloggi slips. So up to the shop Hema, which sell cheap stuff with nice designs, for a pile of colourful and actually very misdesigned knickers. They didn’t sell any bright yellow ones, but fortunately Björn Borg did. The match my free very bright yellow Zeeman tshirt. I was also so happy with my new bikini with exotic flowers and butterflies when I was on the beach in Barcelona.  And thanks to a big bottle of sun shield no. 50 my skin remained blanc as the leafs of a lily…

About knitting. Well, I think that the more South you come, the less knitting you find. But I did find some. Lateron more about it…

De Afstap in Amsterdam in Simply Breien!

August 8th, 2012

Simply Breien

It is great when others are as thrilled about something as you are. So I loved it that Karine visited De Afstap in Amsterdam for a review in Simply Breien nr 3. She loved the shop at first sight. I happily spent my Thursdays as a salesgirl in De Afstap, now for almost four years already. If you like being in a place that much, you better solicitate to work there, was my motivation then when they were looking for an employee. A good decision that I never regretted.

Such a cute shop, stuffed to the top with goodies for knitters. The article consists of two pages, so lots of photos of well filled with yarns and of the old building where put into it. So you feel like you are almost in the shop. But a real life visit to it is even better, preferably on a Thursday…

It was such a great day! Despite a rainshower, the sun was there all the time for all those that enjoyed the sunny day in the heart of Amsterdam. With our dear friends Linda, Johan and Delano we spend a lovely day with looking at the boots in the Prinsengracht, drinking wine and eating in the cozy little street where you also find also the Afstap. In the Warmoesstraat we found the shop owned by knitwear designer Muriel Hoffs, which makes this blog Life ‘n Knitting!

I’m looking forward already to next year!

When you have seen three sheep, you have seen them all, I thought at first when Kerstin invited us to meet her sheep. The six skeins of beautiful Z-twined yarn of these sheep that I bought from her, changed my mind. So Hil lead the way with the Fiesta, as she knew where to go, I follewed with the Kia and then Eva in the pickup, on to the little road that lead to the lake. Kerstin had told Hil that it would be like almost drove into the lake. Just drive on then, she said. Well, that was exactly what almost happened, a few more meters and we would have had all three cars in the water. It was a little sooner a turn to the left. After sqeezing the cars out at the end of the road with sweaty hand palms, we managed to bring them back on the road and reach the place where Kerstin, Bosse and their sheep lived during summer.

The grounds were wet and muddy and we were not dressed for those circumstances, all on our ladylike shoes. Even the neighboors lended us their old rubber boots, so we could go after the sheep with dry feet. It was so special! Kerstin brought us to a meadow with a view on the lake were we almost drove in. There we heard the enchanting sound of bells. The sound came slowly closer when Kerstin’s husband drove the sheep to the meadow. At first a bit scared, but soon comfortable between the strange women on much too big boots, they came closer. A very special breed, Värmlandsfår, beautiful wool, lovely sheep faces, they were so cute! And Kerstin could tell of each skein we bought from her which sheep had grown the fiber.

Kerstin and Bosse are so fond of their animals that they allow the to go on holiday with them. Most time the are on a piece of land close to Stockholm, but eight weeks a year they are on holiday in Dalarna. More then 50 of them, females, males and their offspring. The two small white ones where raised by bottle, so they followed us like dogs and loved to be cuddles. They loved standing close to you and one of them even was allowed to leave the meadow. She wouldn’t dream of running away. After turning in the boots and making another difficult turn on the small path before the houses, we drove home with wonderful memories and a faint smell of sheep wool on our hands. I can still hear the sound of the bells of the sheep coming out of the woods…

Do you want to buy some Z-ply wool of these lovely sheep? Order at Värmlandsfår.
