When you are prompted by several knitters to join a specific Ravelry group, it has to be your thing. In this case it sure was. The group is aimed at knitting the traditional Haapsalu shawls, those with the sewn on border, rectangular or square and made of the right kind of yarn.

A few of the moderators and the Estonian members we know already. There are threads to chat, but also serious threads where information on the specific Estonian patterns is collected. Estonians are friendly helpful people, so I think that this group will generate a source of knowledge, inspiration and exchange.

Thanks tot the Estonian moderators for founding this group!
To become a member of Haapsalu Sall you need to be a member of Ravelry, but which self respecting knitter isn’t?

Helemaal leuk!

We were already happy with the article about The Dutch Knitters in Burda, but now it is also published in Verena. A bit different layout and the same images. Super!

Verena can also be called super with all its nice knitting patterns and articles about, among others, Brittish Tweed. Grey will be the fashion color this winter, but in Verena this is balanced with colourful sweaters based on famous works of art. Not exactly my cup of tea, but there surely will be knitters that love them. The beautiful photos from Paris make me long to go back to this wonderful city. But first….. Londen!

Onze dag is goed…. 😉

A little attention in the media for your activities is always welcome, but a nice, positive article spanning an entire page in the Burda Style is super. With reference to the Handwerkbeurs, where we will be present as always, Burda devotes an interview, two pictures and an image of our logo of sexy knitting lady Antje to The Dutch Knitters. Our day is made

Stitch ‘n Bitch

August 20th, 2010

Niets is minder waar……

Yesterday I was standing at the counter of the Afstap when a tourist wandered in by accident. “Jeez, knitting, my granny used to do that! But that’s not the sort of thing for young people, is it?” Nothing is less true
…

By now there are more than 100 Stitch ‘n Bitch groups in The Netherlands. It all started in Amsterdam end 2004, Utrecht followed a couple of months after that. I have been knitting there since the beginning. I love it, this weekly knitting night, where you can chat about knitting and things in life. The Utrecht group is a large group (often between twenty and thirty knitters and even at the height of summer we keep on knitting industriously), lively and cheerful. So come out of the (knitting) closet, grab your needles and yarn and knit along with one of these 100 groups!

Since the time I first saw Marilyn Monroe in her cherry dress in the Misfits, I love fabric with cherries printed on it. But really nicely printed motifs of cherries on good cotton fabrik, are hard to find. Even my beloved Liberty doesn’t have any suitable cherry fabric for me. A while ago I was lucky, a beautiful coupon, a real bargain, was waiting for me on the Lapjesmarkt in Utrecht.

Of schoenen…… toch?

Don’t worry, I will not exchange my knitting needles for a  the sewing machine. But that afternoon of hard sewing labour ended up in five cheerful knitting bags in three different sizes and with a different ribbon for each of them. The example was the knitting bag Monika made for me, and that is in use all the time. But an avid knitter can always use some extra ones. A woman never has enough knitting bags, shawls and handbags. Or shoes…… don’t you agree?

Shawl mrs Vicky

Shawl mrs Zwaalie (pattern Nancy Marchant) is for me shawl mrs Vicky (see my last blog). Made of two skeins of Noro Silk Garden sock yarn it became a neat and fashionable scarf. Noro finally has added a almost solid color to the collection, that combines beautifully with the more extravagant colors. Unfortunately the yarn is a bit irregular now and then, so there are lumps and thicker parts in it. But the result is fantastic, so we have to forgive Noro for that.

Vicky, can you knit?

My husband Jan loves Vicky Leandros, but that you knew already, isn’t it? A while ago it was time to give him his yearly shot of vitamin V. so I drove him almost 500 kilometers to Gut Basthorst in Germany to hear her sing. The concert was held on the country estate of her ex husband Baron von Rufin, Herr Enno for me when I have to butter him up to get my Jan closer to his idol.

Also thanks to the company of our dear friends Linda and Johan, who even had booked a room on the estate, it was a great weekend and I loved to join in. And Vicky was very sweet, choosing our table to do her press conference during the fan meeting, while Jan was sitting besides her. The ZDF and ARD (the biggest broadcasting companies in Germany) where there and recorded everything.

But what makes this topic knitting related? My knitting was on the table all the time, right in front of Vicky and I couldn’t resist putting it in her hands. She looked at the brioche shawl (pattern Nancy Marchant) from all sides with astonishment, but answered negatively on my question: “Vicky, can you knit?”……

What a good time we had in Estonia! We had delicious meals, lots of Estonian (with brick oven toilet), Medieval (which a matching toilet), Italian, supermarket-at-the-hotel room and four-star diners etc. Always for just a small amount of money and always delicious! Delicious was also the Indonesian rice table Jans’ friend Aty cooked for us for the after party at Jans’ place in beautiful Marken-Binnen. Jans also made sure the toilet was well disinfected, which resulted in some big bleach stains in her pants. Well no problem, with a black marker this problem was solved in no time.

The lovely knitting bags  that Monika made us in the middle of the night, remember us of this wonderful journey. The souvenir show up everywhere. Just like Jans proofed with her table cloth, Corrie can embroider very nicely too. But the knitting bags she made Hil and me are still worked on.  So many nice presents, we feel so spoiled!

We also speak a little Estonian now. Apart from knowing the knitting stitches we know that tere is hello and terviseks is cheers. This soon became ‘op de seks!’ and when we checked the pronunciation again it soon became ‘terrible sex!’

Echt waar. 😉

And then all that stash, books, knitwear etc…… Hil became quite desperate when we tried to stuff it in the suitcases. So why not carry it on your head. Also terrible was our shopping. The photos speak for themselves
 we’re ashamed. Really. 😉

This was the last blog about this extraordinary week. So many exciting things happened and we had a wonderful time together. But the berries in the cucumber-berry water were a bit sour, Ingeborn thought. And so, she declared when she returned to The Netherlands, perfectly summarizing the entire week in one sentence: “Although it sounded like a crazy plan beforehand, I had a fantastic time!”
