Estonia is not advised for vegatarians, that is wat is stated on page 3 from my travel guide. Nice, I thought, and decided to go. In the airplane of Estonian Air/KLM I had to pick the piece of meat from the breadroll, but that was the only little problem. On every menu of the restaurants of Tallinn there is something vega or you can choose fish.

What did you expect to find here, Monika, our friend from Tallinn,  asked, remembering the silly questions I asked her in my mails before our arrival. Are there cash dispensers (yep, on every corner of the street and often you can pay with your card and pincode!) and do the taxi’s also ride at night?
Tallinn is a remarkeble combination between the Middle Ages and the modern world. Between the architectual buildings a ancient tram stops. The travelers are dumped on the middle of the street, but the Estonians are used to that and we are so too now after almost being killed. And after frigthend Monika by walking through red lights all the time……
The infrastructure was promised to be very advanced, mobile contact and internet everywhere, but Hil’s mobile took three days to get used to all that modern stuff. From June 2011 the euro will be the only way to pay, now they still use the Estonian Krone, but al merchants accept our euros already. The average financial living standard is a bit low, so I hope for the Estonians that the transition to the euro will not be very expensive. For us it was very cheap now, 30 to 50% discount al everything!

Wolwinkels in overvloed.

Ready made knitwear is for sale everywhere. Everywhere you see Kasitoo op the fronts of the shops, indicating that they sell handmade stuff, fabrics or yarn. Often the knitwear is made by machines, but often it is of very high quality. Sometimes handknitted. There are some beter craft stores in town, where you can find the better items. A bit more expensive, but for a pair of handknitted mitttens or gloves you never pay more then 20 euro. You can’t knit them for less.

You have to search for it, but at the border of the center of Tallinn, in the neighbourhood Rotermanni, you will find Loovala. This creative center with open studio, houses several crafters and artists. The surroundings are beautiful, old and new buildings are well balanced. They played tricks with the sidewalks, really very dangerous in fact and in the Netherlands this would probably be prohibited. Monika made nice flower pots for it, so the street looks  a bit mediterranean. When the weather is nice.

Monika’s studio is focussed on knitting and yarn. Her cosy corner is located between a silver smith and an artist that likes it more to embroider on wood then textile. The case with handspun yarn can’t be ignored. Ministers that visited the center signed Monika’s black board. All radiates creativity and invites to join in. Here we found a place for your workshop Twined Knitting and the workshop of Tiina Meeri. The only disadvantage of Loovala is the location, much to close to the big chocolate shop Kalev……

Estonian edges, braids, cast-ons and cast-offs make the colourful traditional Estonian mittens even prettier. I had found and tried many of them already but Tiina Meeri, an authority in the knitting world and author of several handicraft books among which five knitting books, knew many more. She makes the nupps in a different way, rounder, bigger and more striking than Nancy Bush does. She gave us a workshop at high speed. One special technique was explained after the other. Dressed entirely in a handmade costume from the area she comes from, she gave instructions in an unparalleled manner that not everyone could follow. Most of us enjoyed it thoroughly but soon a few grew green about the gills and stepped back into the wings.

Tiina’s roots liggen deels in Nederland.

The huge pile of knitted garments she brought with her contained a wealth of special knitting techniques. But her photo album hid a surprise. Tiina’s roots are partly Dutch. Her family name was Rijnsdam and she is in a picture with an interpretation of a Volendam costume. This explains her love of Dutch tulips? By the way she was also interested in Swedish Twined Knitting.

A little nervous she was, she said immediately, for she had not given a workshop for twenty years. But when she discovered how interested we were, she went for it all the way and flew like a twittering little bird from one to the other. She did not want to get paid for her services so we loaded her with gifts. Tiina gave Monika the socks she made especially for this workshop as thanks for lending her the studio. The socks are a treasure from one of the most important knitting artists in the country and Monika will undoubtedly treasure them. We left treasuring a fantastic memory of a very special lady whom we hope to meet again.

I will teach you the beautiful cast-ons, edges and braids in The Dutch Knitters Workshop Estonian Closed Techniques. I should know by now how to do it…..

Have you noticed it? No Life ‘n Knitting for two days now… The provider in the US dropped a stitch and the blog dropped into the digital depths. Fortunately I had a recent backup and after a hard day’s work – luckily with airco – at least there’s a blog again with the posts of the last two months. Unfortunately, I didn’t succeed yet in retrieving your comments, but I’m working on it!

The book Haapsalu Shawl is filled with photos, images from the present and bygone days. So we already had an impression of this village, but the beauty of the town centre, the castle and mainly the Proomenadi exceeded all our expectations. Anyone receiving a guided tour by Aime Edasi and Siiri Reimann is an even happier knitter. After a delicious lunch in the local lunchroom we walked to the town centre together.

First of all they showed us the museum where the beautiful lace shawls, samples, books etc. are exhibited. Hil and I first of all dived into the merchandise, all of it hand-knitted, official Haapsalu shawls, but also beautiful triangular shawls, mittens and socks. With our bags loaded we arrived in the museum. What we saw there was really fabulous. You can get very close to most pieces of knitting and you can even leaf through Linda Elgas’ book. And in the meantime the curator continued knitting her shawl.

This was the moment Jans and Juul took their heels and were found later on at the castle by Monika. Siiri showed us a window at which every now and then the White Lady appears. She did not this time but I could image that these fairy-like surroundings make you fantasize and in my imagination I saw her floating around the castle wearing a Haapsalu shawl around her shoulders….

The Proomenaadi where in the previous century the knitters knitted their merchandise and sold it, is currently being renovated. But even in the current state the boulevard radiates a stylish chic. In your mind you can see the American tourists walking the boulevard and considering the knitted garments. The water, the old hotel, the pillars at the waterfront, everything in Haapsalu is as I hoped it would still be.

After a pleasant dinner in a restaurant with sea views and in the company of Rob, Nelleke’s husband who kindly waited for his wife to finish the workshop, we walked through the quiet village in the direction of the old railway station where we took the bus back to Tallinn at the end of the day. We recognized the station from the photos in the book, a beautiful oasis of tranquillity and style. Faded glory, but kept alive by the knitted stitches of the knitters of then and now.
