Normandië heeft op de vierkante meter de meeste historische bouwwerken, veelal uit de middeleeuwen, maar volgens mij het laagste aantal wolwinkeltjes van heel Frankrijk. Grondig onderzoek bracht slechts wat Phildar in kleine tuttige winkeltjes en op de markt boven water. Er bestaat zelfs een winkeltje met alleen wat Katia, de Katia Boutique. Niet echt interessant dus. De boerderij in Bernesq met een winkeltje met Bergère de France garens, mohairstola’s, shawls en handgebreide truien was dat wel, maar yarn snob als ik ben, liet ik de pluizige garens toch maar voor wat het was.

Normandië has the most historical buildings on a square meter of whole France, mostly from the middle ages, but I think they have the smallest amount of wool shops. A thorough investigation only brought me some Phildar in oldfashioned shops. There is even a shop with only some Katia, the Katia Boutique. Not very interesting. The farm in Bernesq with a shop that sold Bergère de France yarns, mohair stoles, shawls and handknitted sweaters did catch my interest, but I a true yarn snob, so I didn’t buy any of the fuzzy yarns.

Wij brachten afgelopen vijf dagen door in de torenkamer in de westvleugel van Château L’Isle Marie nabij Picauville, midden in de Cotentin in de mouw, oftewel La Manche van Normandië. Een ooievaarsstel had hun nest op de schoorsteen vlak boven onze schouw gebouwd, zodat we iedere morgen werden gewekt door gezellig geklepper. In de salon en op de terrassen kan je een drankje drinken. Om het het ooievaarsgeluk op de schoorsteen niet te verstoren, werd het haardvuur in de salon niet aangemaakt, maar gelukkig troffen we het met lekker zomers weer. Het stijlvol maar toch gezellig ingerichte kasteel en het landgoed was fantastisch mooi en ontbijten in de eetkamer een feest. De enorme gastenkamer heeft een prachtige hemelbed en in de ruime badkamer staat een heerlijk losstaand bad waarin je je na een vermoeiende dag lekker kan ontspannen. In de winter wordt het kasteel omgeven door moeras, maar nu kon je het hele terrein met de vele bijgebouwen zonder natte voeten verkennen. Tijd genoeg, want tv was er niet en Jan moest afkicken van zijn zapverslaving. En overal katjes en honden, de poes des huizes mag zelfs op schoot tijdens een chique diner.

We spent last five days in the towerroom in the west wing of the Château L’Isle Marie near Picauville, in the middle of the Cotentin in the sleeve, the so called La Manche of Normandie. The couple of storks had build their nest on the chimney right over our room, so every morning we where awakened by the noise the made with their becks. In the salon and on the terraces you can take a drink. Not to disturb the happy couple, the big fire in the fireplace in the salon was skipped, but fortunately it was nice weather. The stylish but very cozy castle and the grounds around it was terrific and having breakfast in the dining room was a feast. The enormous gast chamber has a gorgeous four poster bed and in the spacious bathroom there is a beautiful bath where you can relax after a busy day. In the winter the castle is surrounded by a swamp, but in summer you can stroll aroung without getting wet feet. Time enough, as a television wasn’t there so Jan had to kick off his zapp addiction. And everywhere cats and dogs, the housecat is even allowed to sit on your lap during a posh diner.

In Bayeux kan je het 70 meter lange borduurwerk (tapisserie) uit 1066 bewonderen. Het vertelt het verhaal van de intocht van William de Veroveraar in Engeland, zodat ook de ongeletterden wisten welke heldendaden waren verricht. Wie het ook eens wil proberen, kan een borduurpakketje kopen in de giftshop. Shoppen en taartjes eten kan je er ook lekker in de oude winkelstraat van Bayeux. Mont Saint Michel was druk en toeristisch, maar kijk daardoor heen en je ziet een prachtig monument met z’n voetjes in de zee. Ieder dorpje en gehuchtje heeft een kerkje, vaak uit de 12de of 13de eeuw en met begraafplaatsje. In Saint Mère l’Eglise hangt de pop die de onfortuinlijke parachutist verbeeld nog steeds aan de toren. Er zijn serene en smaakvol gerestaureerde abdijen in overvloed. Om de zoveel kilometer staat een bruin bordje langs de weg naar een Château. Maar het meest indrukwekkend waren de stranden waar zoveel soldaten sneuvelden tijdens de invasie aan het eind van de tweede wereldoorlog. Dreigende bunkers en uitkijkplaatsen van de Duitsers, betonnen pontons in de zee, gedenktekens en velden vol hagelwitte kruisjes. Daar word je niet blij van…..

In Bayeux you can see the 70 meter long embroidery work (tapesserie) from 1066. It tells the story of the invasion of William the Conquerer in England, so the even those who couldn’t read, knew about the heroic acts. Who want to try it, can acquire a small embroidery set in the giftshop. Shoppen and eating sweets you can do in the old shopping street in Bayeux. Mont Saint Michel was crowded and touristic, but try to see through that and you see a beautiful monument with it’s feet in the sea. Every little village has a church, some dating of the 12th or 13th century and often also a little cemetary. In Saint Mère l’Eglise you can see the doll hanging on the tower symbolising the unfortunate parachutist that landed on the roof of the church. There are so many serene and tastfully restaured abbeys. Signs to direct you to the castles you see everywhere. But the most impressive where the beachtes where so many soldiers died during the invasion at the end of World War II. Overpowering bunkers and watch places of the Germans, concrete pontoons in the sea, memorials and fields of bright white crosses. That makes you so sad…..

Autootje in, autootje uit, we hebben zoveel gezien dat het lijkt alsof we twee weken weg waren! De eerste dag was de hemel nog volledig streeploos, maar gaandeweg zagen we alsmaar meer vliegtuigen die het weer aandurfden en de IJslandse vulkaanas trotseerden. We prijsden ons gelukkig dat we een autovakantie hadden bedacht. Ondanks dat ik 2200 km reed in slechts vijf dagen, kwam ik toch nog toe aan breien aan mijn Ishbel in paarse zijde. De laatste steek rolde gisteravond thuis van mijn pennen. Misschien is het zo dat als je je project echt geweldig vindt, je alsmaar tijd maakt om nog éven een toertje te doen?

In the car, out the car, we have seen so much that it seems to be two whole weeks instead of five days! The first day the sky was solid blue, but soon more and more stripes appeared from earoplanes that dared to fly again despite vulcanic dust. We were happy that we choose to travel by car. Despite the fact that I drove 2200 kilometers in only five days, I did knit on my Ishbel in purple silk. The last stitch I made yesterday night at home. Maybe, if you like a project so much, you always find time to do one more row?

Vlak nadat Monique B, de getalenteerde kantbreister uit het hoge Noorden, in de Dutch Crafter’s groep op Ravelry een superenthousiaste post doet over de Estlandse kantworkshop bij de Wolhemel die ze afgelopen zaterdag bijwoonde, rolt er van mijn pennen een Russische Orenburg shawl. De Indiski (Indian) shawl van Galina Khmeleva stond in Piecework mei-juni 2009 en ik wist meteen al dat ik die wilde gaan breien van 2ply Qiviut met zijde. Het garen werd me cadeau gedaan door Lonnie, dus heet de shawl ‘Shawl Lonnie’. Hoewel dit garen niet werd gebruikt voor de originele shawls, is het er ontzettend geschikt voor en geeft het de shawl toch een authentieke uitstraling. Echt wolwit cobweb Orenburg-garen, handgesponnen in de Oekraïne, is inmiddels ook in huis en wacht in de ladenkasten van mijn stashzolder om tot een shawl te worden omgetoverd. Maar eerst even de Ishbel van Isolda Teague als lekker vlot projectje ertussen door!

Shortly after Monique B, the talented lace knitter from the North of the Netherlands, posted in the Dutch Crafter’s group on Ravelry, super enthusiasticly about the Estonian Lace Knitting workshop at Wolhemel that she attended last Saturday, a Russian Orenburg shawl rolled of my needles. The Indiski (Indian) shawl van Galina Khmeleva was published in Piecework May-June 2009 and I knew instantly that I wanted to knit this shawl with 2ply Qiviut and silk. The yarn was given to me by Lonnie, so the shawl is named ‘Shawl Lonnie’. Even though this yarn is not used originally for the shawls, it is very suitable and gives the shawl an authentic look and feel. Real wool white cobweb Orenburg yarn, hand spun in the Oukraïn, has recently been added to my stash in the attic and it really wants to be knitted into a wonderful shawl. But first Ishbel designed by Isolda Teague to knit as a nice and quick project in between!

Het interessante van de Indiski shawl zit ‘m voornamelijk in de constructie van de onderdelen die de driehoekige shawl vormen. Je start met het breien van de twee buitenste kantranden, dan brei je daar de binnenste zigzagbanen aan, vervolgens brei je het middendeel schuin op en afsluitend brei je de bovenste schulprand. Met de Russian Graft worden de onderdelen samen gevoegd tot een driehoek. Doordat de hele shawl als ondergrond ribbels heeft en de minderingen er aan beide zijden mooi en redelijk gelijk uitzien, is de shawl tweezijdig. Maar het mooiste vind ik de uitstraling van de shawl door de keuze en plaatsing van de motieven. Geometrie, ruitvormen, sterachtige motieven. Typisch Russisch.

The interesting part of the Indiski shawl is the construction of the seperate parts that form the triangular shawl. You start with knitting the two outer lace borders, then you knit the zigzag inner borders, after that you knit the middle part sideways and last you knit the small lace border. The Russian Graft is used to assemble the parts into a trangle. As the shawl is based on garter stitch and the decreases look well on both sides and almost the same, the shawl is reversible. But I like best the motifs that are so Russian. Geometrical, squares, stars. Typical Russian.

Eén van de beste breisters van de Afstap ging me voor met het breien van maar liefst drie exemplaren voor de verkoop, zodat wie geen zin heeft om ‘m zelf te breien ‘m kant en klaar in de winkel kan kopen voor een heel schappelijk bedrag. En anders kan je altijd vragen of Monique B zo’n prachtshawl voor je wil breien. Maar een echte kantbreiliefhebster doet dat natuurlijk lekker zelf, want het is een geweldig leuk project om te breien. Afstap-klanten die de uitdaging ook aangingen maar moeite hebben met het patroon bellen we op donderdag wel eens op als ik in de winkel ben om te overleggen. Het is even doorzetten, maar dan heb je ook wat.

One of het best knitters from the Afstap already knitted three copies of the shawl for selling in the shop, so if you don’t want to knit it yourself you can buy it for a very reasonable price. And you can also ask Monique B to knit the beautiful shawl for you. But the real lace knitting addict of course will knit it herself. It is such a nice project to knit. Customers of the Afstap that wanted the challenge but have trouble knitting the pattern sometimes call me on Thursdays when I’m in the shop to ask my opinion. It takes some persiverence, but you will end up with a wonderful shaw.

Je zal maar een man hebben die al sinds 1972 gek is op Vicky Leandros. Dan kan je opeens bij een Schlagerfestival in het Zuiden van het land zitten. De meeste muziek vond ik afgrijselijk en hoewel ik Vicky wel een échte vakvrouw vind, kan ik haar muziek niet zo waarderen. Geef mij maar klassiek of mooie doorleefde lagere stemmen als die van Charles Aznavour, Adèle of Amy Winehouse. Maar toen ik Heintje terug zag als Hein, was er toch wel een beetje sentiment. Ik hoor mijn oma nog zeggen dat hij best een goeie echtgenoot voor me zou zijn……

When you have a husband that loves Vicky Leandros since 1972 you might some day end up on a Schlagerfestival in the South of the Netherlands. Most of the music I think was awful and although I have to admit that Vicky is a real good artist, I don’t like her music. I prefer classical or the more down to earth lower voices like the voice of Charles Aznavour, Adèle or Amy Winehouse. But when I saw Heintje as a full grown Hein, I got sentimental. I still can hear my grandmother say that he would make a great husband for me……

Aan echtgenoot Jan had ik de hele dag geen kind, hij ging volledig op in het hele gebeuren. Net als Linda, de handlezeres/paragnoste en Johan in zijn helderwitte blouse en chique blauwfluwelen colbertje, onze lieve vrienden met wie we al menig Vickyreisje hebben gemaakt. Ze genoten alle drie volop van het feit dat Vicky ze als enige fans backstage vroeg, waar ze hun cd’s lieten signeren en ik ze glunderend op de foto zette met hun idool.

My husband Jan had the day of his life and really enjoyed each and every momet. Like Linda, the handreader/paragnoste and Johan in his sparkling white shirt and posh blue velvet jacket, our much appreciated friends with whom we did so many Vicky-related activities. They all enjoyed that they were the only fans that Vicky asked them to come backstage after the show. She signed there cd’s and I made some lovely photos of them with there idol.

We hadden dankzij een uurtje wachten voor de ingang (ik al breiend natuurlijk en Linda en John gegeneerd de bolletjes vasthoudend) geweldig mooie plaatsen pontificaal vooraan in de zaal. Dat leverde de nodige aandacht van de media op, die vooral op Linda’s fotogenieke uiterlijk afkwamen. Het feit dat we onder de 70 en niet gehandicapt zijn, hielp vast ook. Ik mocht wat vertellen over mijn aanwezigheid op het Schlagerfestival. “Nein, Ich bin kein fan!”, maar de journalist was haast vertederd toen ik vertelde dat ik graag met echtgenoot Jan en onze Vicky-vrienden meega om de foto’s te nemen. Toch kwam ik nog aan mijn trekken toen de Tiroolse Antonia op kwam in een zelfontworpen Opal-jurkje. Ik zag het meteen!

Thanks to the hour waiting to get in (I spent the time knitting of course and Linda and John holding my balls of wool, both a bit embarrased) we got the best places in front of the stage. That also was noticed by the media that mainly focussed on Linda’s fotogenetic appearance. The fact that we are under 70 and not disabled must have helped too. I told about my presence on the Schlagerfestival. “Nein, Ich bin kein fan!” (“No, I’m not a fan!”), but the journalist was touched by the fact that I always accompany my husband Jan and our Vicky-friends to take the photos. But at the end I also saw something I liked, when Antonia from the Austrian alps appeared on stage in a Opal dress she designed herself. I noticed it the moment I saw her!

Wie voor de zoveelste keer naar een vakbeurs gaat is soms verbaasder over wat er hetzelfde is gebleven dan over de vernieuwingen. Op de vakbeurs in Keulen vonden we wederom tampongaren, jaren tachtig glittergaren en paspoppen uit het jaar 0. Er was weer een modeshow, Opal liet dit keer de dansers in wildstrepende gebreide pakjes tussen de lentebloesem dansen en Miriam Tegels liet de Duitse dames om het hardst breien.

Anyone who visits the trade fair for the umpteenth time is often more surprised by the things that haven’t changed than by the innovations. On the trade fair in Cologne we again found tampon yarns, eighties fantasy yarns and mannequins straight out of the ark. There was a fashion show again, Opal had the dancers dance between the spring blossom in wildly striped knitted suits and Mirjam Tegels had the German ladies speed knitting.

De grondstof wol komt uit alle hoeken van de wereld, zoals we recentelijk leerden van het tv-programma Keuringsdienst van Waarde . Het wordt gesponnen in weer andere landen en voor de wolwinkels in Nederland en omringende landen wordt het garen veelal verhandeld via Duitsland. De gevestigde orde van grote merken als Lang, Online, Lana Grossa veranderen weinig aan de manier van presenteren. Coats, de inkooporganisatie waaronder ook Rowan valt, gaf een overzicht van de wintermode volgens Amy Butler en de sokkengarens van Regia. Het nieuwe gemeleerde merino sokkengaren is heerlijk zacht en zelfs geschikt voor een kanten shawltje.

The raw material for wool comes from every corner of the world, as we recently learned from the television programme Keuringsdienst van Waarde. It is spun in again other countries and for The Netherlands and neighbouring countries the yarn is often traded through Germany. The established order of large brands such as Lang, Onlineand Lana Grossa do not bring much change in their presentation. Coats, the buyers’ organisation that also deals with Rowan, gave a survey of the winter fashion according to Amy Butler and the Regia sock yarns. The new blended merino sock yarn is very soft and even suitable for a lace shawl.

Juweeltjes van innovatie in de breiwereld worden vaak bedacht door Deense ontwerpers als Karen Noë, Christel Seyfarth en Marianne Isager. Opkomende merken als Lantarn Moon, Be Sweet, BC Garn, Yarn Undyed, Punta Yarns, SandnesGarn en The Rare Yarns Company hebben ook de weg naar Keulen gevonden. Grignasco uit Italië levert een prachtig kantgaren met zijde waarvan ik op het moment een antraciete Estlandse shawl brei. Zealana had heel bijzonder possumgaren. Rowan, met als altijd schitterende kleurenpaletten voor de veelal natuurlijke garens, gaat op de organische toer met de garens. KnitPro heeft het assortiment flink uitgebreid en verkoopt de producten nu ook onder de vlag van Lana Grossa en Prym.

Upcoming brands such as Lantarn Moon, Be Sweet, BC Garn, Yarn Undyed, Punta Yarns, SandnesGarn and The Rare Yarns Company have also found their way to Cologne. Grignasco from Italy has a beautiful lace yarn with silk, the yarn with which I’m knitting an anthracite coloured Estonian Lace shawl. Zealana had very special possum yarn. Rowan, with as ever beautiful colour palettes for the mainly natural yarns, is going organic with its yarns. KnitPro has extended its collection considerably and also sells its products under the names Lana Grossa and Prym.

Ook dit jaar zette Jans, mijn ronde, blonde en o zo gezellige collega uit De Afstap, de wekker op vier uur om op tijd in Amersfoort te zijn om mee te gaan naar Keulen. Met al haar tassies, boterhammetjes zonder humus en vrolijk gebabbel installeerde ze zich achterin de auto. Gedreven door een grote liefde voor het wolwinkeltje in centrum Amsterdam onderwierp ze iedere bolletje, lapje en breinaaldje aan een grondig onderzoek en op geschiktheid voor de winkel. Maar veel van de spullen die trend zijn in de breiwinkel zijn in Keulen nog nooit opgedoken en die worden dan ook elders besteld. Want ja, het wordt steeds leuker in De Afstap.

This year too Jans, my round, blond and very merry colleague from De Afstap, had the alarm clock set for four o’clock to arrive on time in Amersfoort to join us to Cologne. With all her bags, sandwiches without hummus and cheerful chatter she settled herself in the backseat of the car. Driven by a great passion for the yarn shop in Amsterdam she thoroughly tested every ball of yarn, piece of cloth and knitting needle for suitability for the shop. But lots of the stuff that are trend in the shop have never been spotted in Cologne and are therefore ordered elsewhere. For yes, it gets nicer all the time in De Afstap.

We zijn weer helemaal op de hoogte. Veel kabels en entrelac, Russische invloeden, gelukkig veel zwart, antraciet, diverse rood- en paars tintjes, ecologische garens, naaldensets en goed doordachte breitassen. Vilt en wol speciaal voor het vervilten van breiwerk doet het ook goed. Bij de sokkengarens lopen de streepjes net even anders dan verleden jaar, maar wildzelfstrepend garen lijkt onuitroeibaar. Hoewel kantbreien hot is in de breiwereld, dringt het besef dat er behoefte is aan luxe kantgarens maar heel langzaam door in Keulen. Als vervanging van de echte kantgarens wordt vaak een zacht sokkengaren gebruikt, waarvoor wel veel belangstelling is. Misschien over een paar jaar……

We’re completely up-to-date again. Lots of cables and entrelac, Russian influences, fortunately lots of black, anthracite, several reds and purples, ecological yarns, needle kits and well-designed knitting bags. Felt and wool especially for felting your knitting are also a hit. In the sock yarns the stripes are slightly different than last year, but the wild-striping yarn seems indestructible. Although lace knitting is hot in the knitting world, the realisation that there’s a need for luxurious lace yarns is only slowly penetrating in Cologne. As a substitute for real lace yarns often soft sock yarns, which are more in demand, are used. Well, perhaps in a few years time …..

Cursisten doen soms wonderbaarlijke dingen met wat ze geleerd hebben. Paulien, blijkbaar zwaar onder de indruk van de oneindige mogelijkheden van het I-cord, verraste mij met een paaseivormig bolletje vol met chocolade paaseitjes. De eitjes kunnen door de nauwe opening naar buiten worden geperst. En zo kwam het lieve cadeautje aan z\’n naam…… PaasPoeper.

Some students knit the most remarkeble stuff with the things you have taught them. Paulien, obviously very impressed with the immense amount of possibilities of knitting I-cord, surprised me with a ball filled with chocolate Easter eggs. The eggs can be pressed throught the narrow opening. And that is how this sweet present got it\’s name…… Easter Egg Pooper.
