Life 'n Knitting

Veel in het leven bestaat bij de gratie van het tegendeel. Licht en donker, goed en kwaad, positief en negatief. En dan opeens duikt er iemand op tijdens je wekelijkse Stitch ‘n Bitch-avondje, waar je lekker met je breivrienden zit te breien en te beppen, die je de vraag stelt waarom je dag en nacht met breien bezig bent. Met een paar Palmpjes op kom je dan niet ver, maar ook in iets soberder toestand blijft de vraag prangend aanwezig. Breien, wat is er toch in vredesnaam zo leuk aan?

Most things in life exist thanks to the fact that it has an antipole. Light and dark, good and evil, positive and negative. And then someone turns up on your weekly Stitch ‘n Bitch evening, where your are stitching and bitching with your knitting friends, that asks you why you are, day and night, obsessed with knitting. After drinking some beers you can’t come up with a lot of sensible answers, but even more sober the trickering question remains. Knitting, why do I like it that much?

Zo kwam ik er vannacht in bed achter dat mijn fascinatie voor het fenomeen breien terug te voeren is op twee dingen. Enerzijds op de kracht van het element dat twee waarden kan hebben; een steekje recht een een steekje averecht. Zoals in de digitale wereld de programmeurs programma’s componeren uit nullen en enen, zo programmeren de ontwerpers van breiwerk met de bouwstenen recht en averecht. De steek als basiselement van tricot, kantwerk, kabels, kleurenbreiwerk en van de sok. Een doodsimpel lusje met een wereld aan mogelijkheden. Alles kan met de variaties van dit basale principe waarin je de tegenstelling tussen positief en negatief terug kan vinden in recht en averecht.

So this night in my bed I found out that my fascination for the phenomenon knitting is based on two things. On one hand there is the power of the element that can have two values; a knit stitch and a purl stitch. Like in the digital world the programmers compose programs built with the value zero and one, the knitwear designers program their designs with the building blocks knit and purl. The stitch as the basics for stockinette, lace, cables, color work and the sock. A death simple slipknot kind of thing that offers millions of possibilities. All can be done with the variations of this basic principle in which you can see the contrast between positive and negative in knit and purl.

Anderzijds is er de razendsnelle ontwikkeling in de tijd. Globaal nam ik met mijn niet-breiende maar wel zeer geïnteresseerde vraagstelster de breigeschiedenis eventjes door. In de tweede eeuw het eerste Nederlandse breiseltje (of Nälbindung?) gevonden in het graf van een vrouw in Esch in Brabant, wat vondsten in Egypte en pas in de Middeleeuwen concrete bewijzen van de aanwezigheid van de breikunst. In twintigste eeuw stimuleren de eerste breitijdschriften de verspreiding van patronen en technieken stimuleren. Zimmermann, de breigoeroe die in het licht van haar tijd tot vernieuwingen kwam die als groots zijn te beschouwen, zorgde voor innovatie binnen de breiwereld. Economisch breien wordt hobbybreien en de eerste yarn snobs worden geboren. Traditionele breikunst als voedingsbodem voor kunstenaars die breiwerk tot hun persoonlijke uitingsvorm maken.

On the other hand there is the rapid development in time. Roughly I went through the history of knitting with my not-knitting but very interested question-poser. In the second century the first Dutch knitting (or Nälbindung?) was found in a grave of a woman in Esch in Brabant, some findings in Egypt and not sooner then in the middle ages concrete proof of the existence of knitting. In the twentieth century the first knitting magazines stimulated the distribution of patterns and techniques. Zimmermann, the knitting guru that in her time came up with some remarkable inventions, innovated the knitting world. Economical knitting became hobby knitting and the first yarn snobs were born. Traditional knitting as a breeding ground for artist to create their personal expressions.

In de jaren tachtig van de vorige eeuw breit men zich suf met Ariadne en Steek van Margriet, een kreatieve golf die plotseling wordt verdrongen door de opkomst van het internet. Computeren is opeens de hobby van velen. Enen en nullen versus recht en averecht. Maar na een bloedige strijd der tegenstellingen blijkt dat samenwerking beter is dan concurrentie en stimuleert nu juist de opkomst van het medium internet de nieuwe golf aan kreatieve ontwikkelingen op internationaal niveau. Een samenwerking die rustig letterlijk genomen mag worden, want dit aspect komt je overal in de breiwereld tegen, zowel virtueel als Real Life. In vier jaar tijd ontstonden er 84 Stitch ‘n Bitch-groepen in Nederland. Het fenomeen KnitAlong, waarbij grote groepen breiers de krachten bundelen en zich werpen op het breien van één specifiek ontwerp, benadrukt de gemeenschapszin. Mysterie-breien (dan weet je niet eens wélk ontwerp je samen breit) geeft vertrouwen in de ‘leader’ van de groep weer. Zelfhulpgroepen, als zodanig een erfenis uit de jaren tachtig, blijken als communities een krachtig middel om de eigen breikunsten te vergroten. Ravelry groeide in razend tempo uit tot een wereldwijd netwerk van bijna 100.000 breiers. En ieder zichzelf respecterende breier blogt alle breiseltjes die van de pennen rollen.

In the eighties of last century the Dutch knitters knitted with Ariadne and Steek van Margriet, a creative wave that is pushed aside by the birth of the internet. Playing with computers is suddenly a new hobby for lots of people. Zero and one versus knit and purl. But after a bloody battle of the antipoles it seems that collaboration is better then competition. The internet is the medium that stimulates the new creative wave on an international level. Colloboration and cooperation are aspects you can find everywhere in the knitting world but also in Real Life. In four years 84 Stitch ‘n Bitch groups were formed in the Netherlands. The phenomenon KnitAlong, where big groups of knitters gather their forces and work together on one design, develop the sense of community. Mystery knitting (then you don’t even know whát it is you are knitting) shows trust in the leader of the group. Self-help groups, an inheritance of the eighties, proof in the form of communities a powerful system to enlarge knitting skills. Ravelry grew rapidly into a massive network of about 100.000 knitters. And every knitter with a bit of respect for his or hers own capacities blogs every piece of knitting that rolls of the needles.

Maar we hadden het over tegenstelling, toch? In een wereldje waar passie voor breien de boventoon voert, wint de neiging om samen te werken van de wat minder positieve neiging tot concurrentie. Geweldig, want hoewel concurrentie sommigen tot grote hoogten zal kunnen brengen, zweer ik zelf bij de socialere principes van samenwerking en het delen van kennis. Dat brengt me op de rode draad in mijn leven, onderwijs, de onbedwingbare neiging om anderen te laten delen in wat ik zelf al weet en kan en ze te stimuleren boven zichzelf uit te stijgen. En als dochter van een zeer emancipeerde vrouw, kan ik in de breiwereld, waar slechts een enkele man de pennen opneemt, ook nog mijn feministische ei kwijt. Maar daarover later meer…….

But we were discussing antipoles, didn’t we? In a world where passion for knitting dictates what we do, the inclination to cooperation wins from the less positive inclination to compete. Awesome. Some may come to great heights by competing with others, but I love the more social principles of collaboration and sharing knowledge. That brings me to another important aspect of my life, education, the uncontrollable urge to teach other what I already know and can do and to stimulate others to learn. As daughter of a woman who with strong feministic ideas, I also like to go on a razzle in the knitting world with my feminist ideas. But later on more about feminisme and knitting…….

Maar goed, na dit hoogdravende betoog even terug naar de daagse realiteit. Want mogelijk is mijn passie voor breien ook gewoon terug te brengen op de aanmaak van gelukshormonen. Een doodsimpele serotonineverslaving. Repeterende bewegingen, verstand op oneindig, breien tot diep in de nacht, heerlijk toch?

But well, after this swollen elucidation back to the reality of life. Possibly my passion for knitting is just a passion for hormones that make me feel happy. A death simple addiction to serotonine. Repetitive movements, just knitting along, knitting day and night. Feels great, doesn’t it?

De saaiste cursus ooit?
Ik had dat idee over de serieuze breicursus die ik een jaar geleden verzon vanuit mijn eigen behoefte om nog beter te leren breien. Want dát is wat ik belangrijk vind. Ik neem breien bloedje-serieus. Huisnijverheid moet ‘écht handwerk’ worden. Thuisbreiers zouden in staat moeten zijn professioneel breiwerk af te leveren, waarvan je amper kan zien dat het thuis van de pennen is gerold. Of het moet zijn dat het zo mooi is……

The dullest course ever?
I thought that my idea about a serious knitting course I made up a year ago as I too wanted to learn to knit better. As this is just what I think is important. I take knitting very serious. ‘Homemade’ has to be ‘handmade’. Home knitters should be able to deliver professional knitwear, that hardly looks like it has rolled of your needles at home. It should just look smashing……

Het idee mondde uit in het concept ‘Het Betere Breiwerk’, een saaie maar gedegen breiopleiding die bij gevorderde breiers de puntjes op de i moet zetten. En wij maar denken dat geen enkele breier daar belangstelling voor zou hebben. Mis! Tot onze vreugde is de breiopleiding amper op poten gezet en we hebben de eerste groep al vol en een flinke wachtlijst voor de volgende. Wil je ook op de wachtlijst of op de hoogte gehouden worden van nieuwe cursussen? Mail ons dan maar even.

The idea developed into the concept ‘Het Betere Breiwerk’ (Advanced Knitting), a dull but very useful knitting course that should perfect the technique of advanced knitters. We thought that knitters wouldn’t be interested in such a course. Wrong! To our surprise the knitting course is hardly finished and the first group is full and a waiting list is there for the next one. Donderdagavond was de eerste les. We hebben het drie uur lang vrijwel alleen gehad over insteken en omslaan. Door de verschillende breimethodes (Westers, Oosters en Combination Knitting) te onderzoeken en te oefenen vormt zich een beter beeld van wat een steek nu eigenlijk is en hoe deze de structuur van het breiwerk bepaalt. Ook de Portugese manier van breien, met de draad in een speld of om de nek, hebben we uitgeprobeerd. De meesten hadden het best moeilijk om even hun eigen vertrouwde breimethode los te laten. Met de klok mee, tegen de klok in, rechtsom, linksom en voor- en achterlangs. Het bleken verwarrende begrippen te zijn. Vertwijfeld riep Meina uit: “Maar je snapt toch wel dat ik zo al brei sinds mijn zesde!”. Maar yvonnep zag wel wat in de nieuwe methodes en vond juist dat ze vijftig kostbare brei-jaren had verdaan met breien ‘zonder vingers’. Ze vond alles wat ze bij ons leerde makkelijker dan wat ze altijd al deed, maar wist niet of ze daar nu blij of verdrietig om moest zijn.

Thursday evening we gave our first lesson. We kept the students busy with knitting a simple stitch for almost three hours. By researching and practising several knitting methods (Western, Eastern and Combination Knitting) the students form a better image of what a stitch is and how it can form a fabric. The Portugese way of knitting, with the thread in a pin or around the neck, was also practised. Most of the students thought it to be quite difficult to switch to another method. Clockwise, counter clockwise, to the right, to the left, from over or under proofed to be very confusing terms. Desperate Meina called out: “You do have to understand that I knitted this way since I was six years old!”. But yvonnep thought the methods were a relief and that she had wasted fifty precious knitting years knitting ‘without fingers’. She thought everything we tought her was better than what she did until now. But couldn’t decide if this was a positive thing or that it was just making her sad.

Moe maar voldaan begonnen de Betere Breiers aan de voor sommigen best lange terugreis, hun fleurige materialenpakketje met garens, naalden en handige breitools in de tas. We waarderen het dat ze in de avonduren zo’n eind willen reizen voor de cursus. Om de onderlinge communicatie tijdens de maanden dat de cursus loopt op gang te houden, hebben we een besloten Yahoo-groep opgericht waar alle cursisten lid van zijn. Via deze groep zullen ze informatie, foto’s van hun huiswerk, links en bestanden kunnen delen. Ook het tweede deel van het huis- en oefenwerk kunnen ze daar ophalen. Een van de huiswerkopdrachten voor de komende twee weken is dat ze in de Yahoo-groep discussiëren over hun eigen breimethode versus die van anderen en de nieuw geleerde methodes. We hopen dat de vonken ervan af zullen vliegen!

Tired but happy the Betere Breiers started the journey home, the free package with bright colored yarn, needles and handy knitting tools in their bag. Some came from far. We appreciate the fact that they are willing to travel so long in the evening to attend our course. To encourage communication between students during the coming months, we founded a private Yahoo group for the students. In this group they will share information, photos of their homework, links and files. Also the homework and suggestions to practise a bit more will be available in this group. One of the assignments for the next two weeks is discussing their own knittin method versus other students knitting methods. We hope that they will do that passionately!

Alice Starmore, één van de beroemdste breiers van onze tijd, schreef een hele stapel boeken. Sommige zijn goed verkrijgbaar en betaalbaar, maar andere gaan voor enorme bedragen van hand tot hand. Alice Starmore’s Book of Fair Isle Knitting wordt gelukkig herdrukt. Maar Aran Knitting, het boek dat we allemaal zo graag willen hebbben, kost honderden dollars. Het staat in 2007 hoog in de top 10 van wereldwijd meest gezochte boeken. Onbereikbaar voor de meesten van ons.

Alice Starmore, one of the most famous knitters of our time, wrote a pile of books. Some can be purchased easily, but others are very expensive. Alice Starmore’s Book of Fair Isle Knitting is in reprint now. But Aran Knitting, the book we all want, costs hundreds of dollars. It was in the top 10 of most searched after books worldwide. Out of reach for most of us.

Het meesterwerk op het gebied van Aran breitechnieken, tjokvol uitdagenden kabelpatronen, heb ik zelf nog nooit in handen gehad. Maar het moet geweldig zijn. En ik wil ‘m ook in de boekenkast. Toen bedacht ik dat we met z’n allen Alice hierom kunnen vragen. Doe mee met de actie om het boek herdrukt te krijgen. Vul het formulier op The Dutch Knitters in en beargumenteer waarom je vindt dat het boek herdrukt moet worden. Wij zullen alle binnengekomen post tot één grote petitie samenvoegen en deze aan Alice aanbieden. Daar móet ze toch gevoelig voor zijn!

I never browsed through the masterpiece on Aran Knitting techniques, stuffed with challenging cable patterns. But I heard that is a wonderful book. And I want it on my bookshelf. Then I thought that we could all ask Alice to have her book reprinted. Join the petition to have the book reprinted. Fill in the form on The Dutch Knitters and give your arguments why the book should be reprinted. We will gather all posts into one big petition which will be offered to Alice. She must be susceptible to this request!

De workshop die ik afgelopen zondag gaf in De Afstap in Amsterdam heet Estlandse Breitechnieken. Dat komt niet zomaar uit de lucht vallen.  The Dutch Knitters is vreselijk onder de indruk zijn van het breien uit Estland. Ik vind het de schatkist van het Europese breien. Beïnvloed door omringende landen als Rusland, Zweden, Noorwegen en andere landen, verenigt dit land een schat aan breitechnieken, motieven, kantpatronen en decoratieve randjes en opzetten.

The workshop of last Sunday in De Afstap in Amsterdam is called Estonian Knitting Techniques. The Dutch Knitters made this workshop up because I am are very impressed by the knitting in Estonia. I see it as the treasure chest of the European knitting. Influenced by countries around ir (Russia, Sweden, Norway and so on), this country has gathered a wealth on knitting techniques, motifs, lace patterns and decorative borders and cast ons.

Of ik er al eens geweest ben? Nee, maar ik wil wel! Ondertussen verzamel ik alle info over Estland’s breien waar we de hand op kunnen leggen. Zo kreeg ik genoeg mooie technieken bij elkaar om de cursisten volledig murv te krijgen. Het ene mooie opzetje na het andere, prachtige decoratieve randjes en bijzondere kantsteken. En nupps (spreek uit noeps). Nupps komen in allerlei soorten en maten, maar volgens de cursisten ook zijn er ook illegale nupps en voor het gemak druk je de maat van de nupp uit in cupmaten. Het leukst is natuurlijk de nupp dubbel-D!

No, I haven’t been there yet. But I love to go! In the meanwhile I gather all information on Estonian knitting we can find. And I found enough to wear our students out, totally. One beautiful cast on after another, lovely decorative borders and nice edge stitches. And nupps (pronounced noops). Nupps are there in different kinds and sizes, but according to our students there are also illegal nupps and for the fun of it the different sizes were compared to cup sizes. The best of course is the nupp double-D!

Vrijwel alle cursisten kwamen voortdurend op verkeerde aantallen steken uit. Vrolijk riepen ik dan “Bijna goed!”, maar menig steekje werd daarna vrolijk bijgemaakt of weggemoffeld. Twee cursisten breiden op de continentaalse manier, over de linkervinger. Zonder moeite breiden ze de moeilijkste steken, maar na afloop van de workshop wisten ze amper nog het onderscheid tussen recht en averecht. Wij waren al lang blij dat het geen Combination Knitters waren, want dan is de boot pas echt aan.

Almost all students ended up with wrong amounts of stitches all the time. Cheerful I then said “Almost good!”, and many stitches were then sneakely decreased or increased. Two students knitted in the continental way (with the yarn over the left finger). Without trouble they made the most difficult stitches, but after a while they couldn’t see the difference between knit and purl. We were happy there were no Combination Knitters, that would have been a disaster to teach to!

Anke deed ook mee met de workshop. Ze verraste me met gezellige tassen in een Hollandse stijl. En ze gaat binnenkort beroemd worden, maar daar over later meer……

Anke also joined the workshop. She surprised me with cheerful bags in old Dutch style. And she is going to be famous, but about that lateron more……

De cursisten waarschuwden elkaar dat alles wat je er tijdens een TDK-workshop uitkraamt, mogelijk op Life ‘n Knitting terecht komt. De laatste vraag kwam toen het bijna vijf uur was over wanneer we nu toch eindelijk aan de kant-opdracht zouden beginnen? “Maar lieve meid, dié heb je net gedaan, maar dan met héél dik garen!”.

The students warned eachother that all you say in a TDK’s workshop can be used against you on Life ‘n Knitting. The last question came when it was almost 17.00 h. and was an inquiry about when the lace asignment would begin? “But my dear, that you just did, but you used véry thick yarn!”.

Life ‘n Knitting is vandaag jarig en is nu precies twee jaar oud! Sinds die tijd deel ik breigerelateerd lief en leed met breiend Nederland en daarbuiten. En dat hoop ik nog heel lang zo te doen…….

Life ‘n Knitting is having it’s birthday today and is two years old now! Since that day I share all kind of knitting related events in my life with the knitters in the Netherlands and beyond. And I hope to continue doing that for a long time…….

Sinds de start van Stitch ‘n Bitch in november 2004 (Amsterdam) en february 2005 (Utrecht) is er veel gebeurd. Inmiddels zijn er 82 groepen in Nederland. Er verschijnen regelmatig nieuwe breiwinkeltjes, meestal online, en vaak met een verfrissende nieuwe kijk op het breien. Zoals Penelope Crafts, HolyWoly, Zeven Katten en Trikoo. Breien staat op de trendlist voor 2009. Regelmatig besteden de media aandacht aan de breitrend. Wekelijks komen er nieuwe breiboeken uit, meestal Engelstalig, maar soms ook in het Nederlands. Het Textielmuseum in Tilburg wijdt dit voorjaar een tentoonstelling aan het thema breien. En The Dutch Knitters breien zich een slag in de rondte om de promotie van het breien aan alle kanten te ondersteunen en te stimuleren. Het gaat goed met het breien in Nederland en de internationale breiwereld is, dankzij internet, ons speeltuintje en wij vermaken ons daarmee kostelijk!

Since the start of Stitch ‘n Bitch in November 2004 (Amsterdam) en February 2005 (Utrecht) a lot has happened. There are now 82 groups in the Netherlands. Regularly there appear new knitting shops, most of them online, and often they seem to have a fresh new oponion on knitting. Like Penelope Crafts, HolyWoly, Zeven Katten en Trikoo. Knitting is in the trend list 2009. The media often show interest in the new knitting trend. On a weekly basis new knitting books are published, most of them English, but som in Nederlands. The Textielmuseum in Tilburg will have an exposition on knitting this spring. And The Dutch Knitters knit like crazy to promote knitting every way they can. It goes well with knitting in the Netherlands and the international knitting world is, thanks to the internet, our playground and we love it!

Strikjes, Viktor & Rolf, de wereldberoemde Nederlandse ontwerpers, zijn er weg van. Ze verwerkten ze in overvloed in de bruidsjurk van Mabel (het wijf van die lange) en diverse andere ontwerpen. DomiKNITrix, meestal een liefhebster van hardcore breiwerk, gebruikte het lieflijke strikjesthema voor haar Sweetheart Sweater. Ook Elsa Schiaparelli zag wel iets in strikjes. Al in 1927 verwerkte ze een trompe l’oeil-strik in een stijlvol en elegant truitje. Het patroon kan je gratis downloaden bij Schoolhouse Press. Ook zie ik overeenkomsten tussen Schiaparelli’s Lobster Dress en de I love you-jurk van Viktor & Rolf. En zelfs in de manier waarop ze grapjes integreren in serieuze ontwerpen zie ik gelijkgestemdheid tussen Elsa, Viktor en Rolf. Of het nu handschoenen met nagellak, de Shoe Hat, de bedjurk of Hollandse klompen met hoge hakken zijn. Antje, de mascotte van The Dutch Knitters heeft haar lompe klompen ook al ingewisseld voor wat sexier hooggehakte exemplaren.

Bows, Viktor & Rolf, the world famous Dutch designers, love them. They have incorporated them in large amounts in the wedding dress of Mabel (a royal that was assumed to have been the lover of a criminal) and lots of other designs. DomiKNITrix, foremost a designer of hardcore knittings, used the girly bow theme for her Sweetheart Sweater. Elsa Schiaparelli also was inspired by bows. In 1927 she designed a sweater with a trompe l’oeil bow. The pattern can be downloaded for free at Schoolhouse Press. I also see similarities between Schiaparelli’s Lobster Dress and the I Love You dress made by Viktor & Rolf. And even in the way they incorperate funny gimmicks in designs I can see the resemblance between Elsa, Viktor and Rolf. Gloves with nail polish, the Shoe Hat, the Bed dress or the Dutch clogs with high heels, it is all the same kind of humor. Antje, the mascot of The Dutch Knitters has already changed her clogs for sexier ones with high heels too.

Viktor & Rolf hebben niet veel met breisels. Dat was een beetje jammer, want een echte breier hoopt daar wel op als ze een tentoonstelling over mode bezoekt. Toch genoot ik van de prachtige tentoonstelling in het Centraal Museum in Utrecht. Zelfs het sensationele poppenhuis was er zodat je de meeste modellen zowel in verkleinde vorm als op levensgrote poppen kon bewonderen. Je kan er tot 8 februari nog heen, vooral doén!

Viktor & Rolf don’t do much with knitting. That is a bit of a disappointment for a knitter that always hopes to find knittings on exhibitions about fashion. But even so I really enjoyed the great exhibition in the Centraal Museum in Utrecht. Even the doll house was there so you can see most models in smaller and lifelike versions. It is open until 8 February, so don’t miss it!

Man Jan en ik waarderen de inventiviteit en creativiteit waarmee Viktor & Rolf hun ontwerpen vorm geven. Als studenten Lerarenopleiding Textiele Werkvormen aan de SOL waren wij in 1981 bezig met het vervormen van het menselijk lichaam door middel van het uitvergroten van delen van de kleding. Wij stopten Jan’s zakvormige pak vol ballonnen en in een spannende performance prikte ik die ballonnen één voor één leeg waarna Jan met veel gevoel voor drama inzakte als een plumpudding. De ballonnen in de ballonnenjurk van Viktor & Rolf hebben het wel overleefd, net als man Jan gelukkig……

Husband Jan and I admire the inventivity and creativity with Viktor & Rolf use to design their fashion. As students of the school for teachers in Textile Arts and Crafts (SOL) where in 1981 we studied deforming the human body by enlarging parts of the clothing. We stuffed Jan’s sack formed suite with balloons and in a exciting perfomance I poked them all with a pin until there not one was left. Jan, with lots of drama, collapsed like a plum pudding gone bad. The balloons in the balloon dress of Viktor & Rolf survived, like husband Jan did, fortunately…….

Om het te vieren werd meteen maar de nieuwe agenda voor winter/lente 2009 gepubliceerd op de site.
