Today ten ladies for our workshop Magical Circular Needles stepped down into the shop De Afstap. Full of anticipation about what was to come but also looking forward to a nice day out. Some from the surroundings of Amsterdam, but also from Voorburg, Pijnacker and even Friesland (North of the Netherlands). We felt very honoured that some travelled so long to attend our workshop. Apparently there is a need for workshops for advanced knitters stuffed with knowledge about knitting and with emphasis on techniques. So we started making up new workshops right away. The next workshop about finishing techniques that was already scheduled is sold out and for the workshop about socks there are only three places left.

It surely was a nice day! A noisy and animated group of students that at the end of the day called eachother ‘honey’ without any hesitation. The continental straddle was accepted as a regular knitting term and someone asked if that was the only position suitable for knitting. Ah well, this last sentence was hard to translate, but believe me, this group of women rolled over the floor with laughter! Despite of the hilarity we smoothly worked through all the stuff on the program. At about 16.00 h. we had practised two moebius cast-ons and four beautiful techniques for casting on on circulars we had time enough to explain the I-cord cast-off (one of the best for casting off a moebius). When we had 30 minutes left we saw some of the students checking out completely. The other half wanted to use the last moments of the day to learn the Italian and Estonian cast-on. Dizzy or not, everyone left happy and content. We hope to see you on the fair in Zwolle or at the next workshop.

It is such a joy that knitting and sharing our knitting knowledge and skills is our work. Hil and I think that we are priveliged to be able to this work that gives us so much pleasure.

The devil is old……

  • Gemiddelde leeftijd – Average age: 37
  • < 20: 2%
  • 20-29: 29%
  • 30-39: 32%
  • 40-49: 21%
  • 50-59: 13%
  • 60-69: 3%
  • 70 en ouder – 70 and above: < 1%

Ravelry has almost 70.000 members now. Time to hold a survey and take a look at the statistics. Especially the age distribution was surprising. Since the introduction of Stitch ‘n Bitch in the Netherlands the media tried to picture knitting as hip and above all young, but the figures from Ravelry show a different image. Only 2% of the knitters is under 20 years old and the average age is nothing less as 37! You can ask yourself if Ravelry describe a right image of the knitting world, but as it are mostly the younger people that can find their way on the internet, I think that the average age of áll knitters can be even higher.

Is that a problem? Of course not! A lot of women aged 40, 50 years old discover that they become invisible for the media and that there are not many fun things to do for them. This lead to the founding of the initiative Red Hat Society, where 50plus women meet and just go out and have fun, no matter what other people think about it. With a red or purple hat on their head. So, if the ladies want to go to the pub to knit, well, they just dó it. Knitting with a red hat is allowed too.

My opinion is that the more distributed the age is of the knitters on knitting meetings, the better. I just lóve it that at SnB Utrecht there are knitters from 19 till 90 years old. So we can learn a lot of eachother. About all aspects of life…..

Yesterday Nelleke and Hil came to my house to enjoy a day of spinning together. So the rainy grey Monday turned out to be a nice day with a little help of goodies to eat with the koffie verkeerd (Dutch white coffee). Hil spun to her own surprise some yarn some quite good yarn (did you practise?) and Nelleke noticed that she didn’t forget much from when she had her last spin mania in the eighties. As Hil and Nelleke didn’t need much attention, I was able to spin the beautiful Gotland fibers I bought during the Textielweekend in Tilburg. Heary, long fibers, pure light grey, not very soft, but strong. Since I spin I’m getting more and more interested in finding wool of special kinds of sheep and more exotic animals.

The mittens and hat knitted from the kidmohair in woolwhite and deep red are finished. They are too cute and I associate them with old fashioned cold winters with lots of snow and ice. But in the winter of 2007-2008 the caple make of ice on the Domplein in Utrecht melted in only two days to a pool of water and the snowdrop flowers come out of the ground much too soon.

Twined Knitting keeps me interested. A wonderful technique with endless possibilities. And that should know and experience every knitter…….  Hil and I give some more workshops soon in Zeeland (in the South-West of the Netherlands) and in Belgium. And I have founded the Yahoo group Twined Knitting. At this moment 118 knitters have became member. There is a posting, a lot of links and some proudly presented their work by uploading photos. The intention is to start a KnitAlong soon, so we can really do some Twined Knitting. Btw, I also started a Twined Knitting group in Ravelry.

I invite you all to join in!

    Knitting is hot! Or not?

    January 16th, 2008

The slogan ‘knitting is hot’ is starting to wear out.
    Three years ago the
Stitch ‘n Bitch phenomenon came across the Atlantic to Amsterdam. A couple of months later SnB Utrecht started. After that some 50 groups throughout the country followed. Knitting in public, that was something special in those days. Radio, television and newspapers, they all wanted to interview these trendy knitting girls or even better, a knitting man. Young, bouncy and preferably knitting a super trendy garment on 20 mm needles. But the impression the media tried to give of the knitting phenomenon does not correspond with reality anymore.

Hypes come and go. Knitting in public attracts little attention anymore. Many SnB-members have had enough of knitting at fairs. Without any doubt the typical knitting cafes are still inspiring and fun. New groups are started and regularly new knitters want to join, but the continuity is safeguarded by a core of more fanatic knitters.
Despite the fact that the winter season is by far the season for knitting, SnB NL has received no spontaneous invitations from the media or for activities since the
SnB-Dag 2007 early November last year. This contrasts sharply with the media hype just a year ago. Activities only take place when we organise or initiate them ourselves. Keeping the Stitch ‘n Bitch Nederland site up to date only takes a few hours a month now. Brushing up the entire knitting phenomenon in common-sensical Holland is not a small thing anymore….

Knitting has become a socially accepted phenomenon. This phenomenon’s driving force is the internet which makes communication, the exchange of information and the opportunity to order knitting stuff world wide possible. Sites such as Ravelry knit the world together. Knitters learn new techniques from videos on YouTube. And what self-respecting knitter doesn’t have a KnitBlog? Debbie Stoller, Stephanie Pearl-McPhee en Amy Singer (van Knitty.com) contribute their mite to the innovative influences in knitting. But also famous knitters such as Elizabeth Zimmermann, Kaffe Fassett en Alice Starmore are once again appreciated. Some knitters prefer enjoyable workshops in which a teacher helps them to raise their level of knowledge and skills in a short period of time. Afterwards they use Yahoo-groups to discuss the workshop, send in photos of their first project in the new technique or to ask questions.

This is my personal opinion of what I have seen and experienced in the knitting scene in the last three years. A mushroom growth fitting these times. A change from local to mondial. From knitting domestically on the couch to social knitting in public with the remarkable combination of digital and Real Life contact. From knitting for economical purposes to Yarn Snobs. From Ariadne to
Vogue Knitting  and Japanese knitting books. From hype to hobby. Stitch ‘n Bitch as a medium to introduce new developments to a larger public. A  phenomenon flaming high after 9/11, providing the spark for a revival of creativity and artistry.

The hype produced a flying start of a movement that, in this more serious form, can lead to a milestone in the history of knitting, for the benefit of knitters worldwide. Because of the availability of old and new forms there is breeding ground for a deepening and broadening of knowledge and skills in knitting that was not possible in last century’s creative eighties. The combination of creativity from the eighties and the technological developments of the nineties of last century can bring the art of knitting to unprecedented heights in this century.

The hype is moth-eaten, not the wool!

Last Sunday Hil and I gave a workshop Twined Knitting in De Afstap in Amsterdam. A nice group with some wellknown faces, among who our SnB friend Arja, a few regulars and birthday girl Sabine. She had a surprise for uw. At the end of the day Lonnie brought a wicker basket with Sabine’s delicious bottle of champagne up with drunk, wishing Sabine a great knitting year!

So now there are a few more enthusiastics for the beautiful technique Twined Knitting. All basic techniques and stitches plus thumb were practised in a strang looking shortened mitten with a even funnier looking mini thumb. The patterns for the hat and mittens Hannele and pouch Première we gave to the students, so at home than can continue praktising.

On the quiet Sundays a lot of tourist that see there a people in the shop try to come in. A German woman liked it so much that they made photos standing in the door downstairs. ‘If you flash me, I will flash you……. 😉

For the workshop Toveren met een Rondbreinaald (moebius, magic loop and seamless castons) on January 27 we have only three seats left.

The ‘Kaiserin Sissy from Knittingland’ is without any doubt Elizabeth Zimmermann. This expert in knitting was born in 1910. She died in 1999. Her big merits were the promotion of for her days innovative knitting techniques like knitting in the round and continental knitting. She described her patterns and techniques in a clear way, which made also the more difficult patterns suitable for young and old knitters.

Elizabeth learned the first stitches from her mother. She taught her dochter Meg Swansen the technique and transferred her knowledge of knitting onto her. In Wisconsin in the US Elizabeth founded in 1959 Schoolhouse Press. This company is now lead by her daughter Meg.

Fortunately a lot of the knowledge of mother and daugther is registrated in several books. In Knitting without Tears you find the pattern of the Snail Hat (also called the Dairy Queen Hat). Simple to knit with big wool this project can be completed in only one evening. But the effect is marvellous! I knitted the hat in wool white Nordic made by Katia, so it resembles a pile of whipped cream.

Today Corrie and I enjoyed a day out in the surroundings of Utrecht where we visited some yarn shops. First the Schapekop where Gretha and Carina welcomed us with coffee and bargains. Corrie bought some Noro bouclé, black and white mohair and sock wool. And because it was such a special day for her, she treated herself on a beautiful book written by Sarah Dallas. I completed my stash Alice Starmore wool with some beautiful colours. Then we went to Oudewater where we bought practical wool protectors in baby pink. There I also found the thick single ply wool white for needles 10 mm voor de Snail Hat of Elizabeth Zimmermann. The owner of the shop told us about the Distel Outlet in Montfoort. Of course we wanted to go there too. After a search mission on the industrial zone we found the outlet in an barn. Rows of boxes filled with wool for next to nothing. A lot was synthetic, but we also found some beautiful balls that we couldn’t resist. Puddle for just an euro, linen for a vest or bag and even deep purple superwash wool. Corrie took in the nick of time the last balls of a posh braun colour. And a lot more……

On January 13th I will give a workshop (whole day) in De Afstap in Amsterdam. Twined Knitting will be the subject. Wonderful, this beautiful technique is really my thing. From the moment I spotted this Swedish technique, I was hooked. Nice thick and it holds its form so well, nicely striped or elegant woolwhite and even fun to do.
There are still some places, so if you want to join in,
    call the De Afstap: 020 – 62 31 445

For this workshop I designed a pair of mittens and a hat that the students can knit after the workshop. I finished them on the Swedish name day of Hannele, so this became the name. In fresh ‘Swedish’ colours and with a red contrasting thread and traditional cords. The had has a double decrease which creates a nice pattern like the wings of a mill. And it gives the hat a good round form.

The workshop Toveren met een Rondbreinaald (Magic with Circular Needles – moebiusses and some beautiful castons with circulars) was a great success and will be repeated on January 27th. Making some magic too is possible, you just have to call the De Afstap!
