Life 'n Knitting

De drukke maanden september en november van een bewogen brei-jaar liggen achter me en ik laat het jaar nog even de revue passeren. Een druk jaar waar ik op alle fronten veel van geleerd en de meeste tijd erg van genoten heb.

The busy months September and November of a knitting year with ups and downs lay behind me and I review it now at the end of it. A turbulent year from which I learned a lot and which I enjoyed most of the time.

De Sampler M en Knitting in Japan-groepen lopen prima met allebei bijna duizend leden. De SnB-Dag 2007 werd weer enorm gewaardeerd en de beurzen waar we aanwezig waren met onze breivrienden waren gezellig en leerzaam. Ik schrijf weer met veel plezier en enthousiasme artikelen voor Handwerken zonder Grenzen, in het volgende nummer over breien uit Japanse boeken. Ravelry is het digitale breispeeltuintje waar ik dagelijks te vinden ben. Ravelry, het digitale platform dat de volgende stap is in het proces van het ontstaan van een grote internationale breigemeenschap waarbij internet bijna net zo’n belangrijke rol speelt als naalden en garens.
Life ‘n Knitting bestaat bijna één jaar en wordt goed bezocht.

The Sampler M and Knitting in Japan groups are doing well with both almost a thousand members. The SnB-Dag 2007was a much appreciated event and the fairs where we were present with our knitting friend were cosy and instructive. I so happy to have resumed writing for Handwerken zonder Grenzen, in next issue there will be an article about knitting from Japanese books. Ravelry, the digital platform that is the next step in the proces of the develpment of an international community for which the internet is just as important als needles and yarn.
Life ‘n Knitting is almost one year old and lot’s of knitters visit it regularly.

Mijn fascinatie voor de Zweedse techniek Twined Knitting krijgt me steeds meer in haar greep en ik probeer met de hulp van mijn Zweedse vriendin Kerstin Jönsson zo veel mogelijk erover te weten te komen. Maar bovenal geniet ik van het succes van onze workshops in onder meer De Afstap in Amsterdam. Samen werken we naar het nog verder vergroten van onze kennis en vaardigheden, zodat we ons aanbod aan workshops kunnen verbreden en verdiepen.

En er staat ons nog zo veel meer te wachten! We bruisen van de ideeën waar binnenkort meer over onthuld zal worden. Er is heel veel werk, maar het is werk waar ik mijn passie voor breien in kwijt kan, dus ik doe het zo graag. Ja ja, in het nieuwe jaar meer hierover. Ik ben er helemaal klaar voor!

My fascination for the Swedish technique Twined Knitting is growing more and more and with the help of my Swedish friend Kersting Jönsson I try to learn as much as possible. But above all I enjoy the succesfull workshops I gave in De Afstap in Amsterdam. Together we work on enlarging our knowledge and skills so we will be able to broaden and deepen the workshops we offer.

And so many more exciting things are waiting to be revealed! We are bubbling over with new ideas which will be revealed soon. Lot’s of work, but work that incorporates my passion for knitting, so I love doing it. Yes, we will tell you more in 2008. I’m ready for it!

‘Over the Knee Socks’, noemt Debbie Stoller ze, de lekker lange kousen tot over je knieën. Vooral het paar in HandKnit Holidays vond ik erg mooi. Ze hebben een nepnaad bestaande uit ajour over de kuit en een mooi gevormde hiel. In Rijswijk zocht ik er bij Wolhalla prachtige Colinette Jitterbug voor uit. Ja, in het dieppaars.

De paarse omslagdoek is ook af. En lekker warm dat ‘ie is! 🙂

‘Over the Knee Socks’, Debbie Stoller called them, the nice long stockings that reach over your knees. Especially the pair in HandKnit Holidays I loved. They have a fake seam that consists of a line eyelets over your calves. In Rijswijk I found Colinette Jitterbug from Wolhalla. Yes, in deep purple.

The purple triangle stole is finished too. So nice and warm! 🙂

De Over-the-Knees Socks zijn af! Ze breide zo lekker dat het maar vijf dagen duurde voor ze van de pennen rolden. En ik vind ze helemaal gewéldig. De draagbaarheid, tja, dat moeten we nog maar zien, maar het zijn leuke hebbedingen en ze zitten zalig.

De stekenproef leverde weliswaar wel het goeie aantal steken op, maar niet het aantal toeren, dus er zitten wat meer gaatjes in de naad over de kuit. Ook heb ik de teen vervangen door mijn geliefde 4-point star-teen. De platte teen uit het patroon levert zeker bij een nauwsluitende pasvorm namelijk altijd gaatjes op aan de zijkanten (niet als je toe-up breit overigens) en dat is bij deze teen niet het geval. Er zitten maar twee knotten Colinette Jitterbug plus 10 gram van de derde knot in. Mooi hieltje ook hè.

The Over-the-Knees Socks are finished! They knitted so nicely that it took only five days to finish them. And I really love them. How to wear them, well, we will see, but it are such nice things to have and the fit is perfect.

Even though the gauge produced the right amount of stitches, the amount of rows was lower, so I made more holes in the seam over the calf. I also replaced the toe with my favorite 4 point star toe. The flat toe from the pattern always makes little holes on the sides when you knit a tight foot (not when you knit toe-up) and the 4 point star toe doesn’t leave holes. They are made of two skeins of Colinette Jitterbug plus 10 grams of the third skein. Nice heel, don’t you think?

Na alle drukte van de afgelopen maanden wil je wel weer eens lekker iets voor jezelf breien. Vooral niet te ingewikkeld en met mooi materiaal. En vooral ook iets dat warmte en comfort uitstraalt. Dus een zalige wollige omslagdoek van tien bollen KidSilk Aura met zeer hoog knuffelbaarheidsgehalte in een trendy dieppaarse kleur. Het patroon komt uit Victorian Lace Today van Jane Sowerby. Zij verdiepte zich in de oude Victoriaanse patronen voor shawls en stola’s en vertaalde deze naar de hedendaagse garens en kleuren. Het prachtig vormgegeven boek is zowel een aanwinst voor de salontafel als een bron van uitzonderlijk mooie patronen en technische informatie.

After some busy months you like to knit something just for the fun of knitting. Not too complicated and with beautiful yarn. And above all something that radiates warmth and comfort. So I choose a nice and fluffy triangle stole made of ten balls of KidSilk Aura with a very high potential to be cuddled in a deep purple colour. The pattern is published in Victorian Lace Today van Jane Sowerby. She studied the old Victorian patterns for shawls and stoles and translated them into comtemporary yarns and colours. This book with it’s wonderful layout is a treasure and wonderful to browse through, but also a source of extraordinary beautiful patterns and technical information.

De randen van de omslagdoeken en stola’s worden er na het breien van de middenpanelen aangebreid. Bij de hoekpunten worden daarvoor meerdere toeren in dezelfde steek vastgebreid om hier meer ruimte te creëren. Deze methode is heel anders dan de methode voor Shetland-shawls. Hierbij start men met het breien van een strook kant, waarna langs de binnenkant de steken worden opgenomen. Bij de hoekpunt zorgen voor shortrows voor de nodige ruimte. Hierna wordt de rand gelijkop gebreid met het middenpaneel. Bij rechthoekige stola’s worden de twee gelijke helften onzichtbaar aan elkaar gemaast. Zo is ook de MondNacht gebreid.

The borders of the shawls and stoles are knitted on after the center pieces are knitted. At the corners more then one row is knitted together with one stitch of the center piece to create more space. This method is different from the method used with Shetland shawls. Here you start with knitting a strip of lace. Then you pick up the stitches on the inner side. At the corners shortrows are used to create the necessary extra space. The border and center piece are now knitted at the same time. The both halves of the square stoles are joined together in the middle unvisuably with the kitchener stitch. This way the MondNacht is created.

Het patroon voor mijn omslagdoek heet Shoulder Shawl in Syrian Pattern en stamt uit 1891 (Weldon’s Practical Needlework uitgave 62, volume 6). Het eenvoudige maar goed uitgebalanceerde streepjespatroon in ajour werd oorspronkelijk afgewerkt met een geknoopte rand franje, maar de Sowerby heeft gekozen voor een smalle rand kant uit de Weldon’s uit 1890 ‘How to Knit Borders’. Vooral in de pluizige zachte kidmohair waarin ik de omslagdoek brei een prima keuze.

The pattern of my stole is Shoulder Shawl in Syrian Pattern and originates from 1891 (Weldon’s uitgave 62, volume 6). It is a simple but well balanced striped lace pattern that was originally finished with a border of knotted fringe, but Sowerby choose for a small lace border from Weldon’s 1890 ‘How to Knit Borders’. Especially for the fluffy soft kidmohair a good choice.

Het was overigens niet het enige kreatieve dat ik deze week deed met de kleur paars. De 16-jarige dochter van een vriendin had haar eerste gala in een schitterende strapless jurk, in het paars….. Man Jan nam de jurk in van maat 40 naar 36 en ik draafde op met tassen vol make up om de rest van de styling aan te passen op de uitzonderlijke kleur. Heerlijk, dat getuttel. De Smokey Eyes waren bij nader inzien iets te heftig naar de smaak van de debutante, maar de techniek leverde in gematigder vorm een prachtig resultaat op en de krullers zorgden voor een grote bos golvend haar. Big Hair, ook al zo’n bijzondere trend van dit moment maar iets te heftig voor haar om zich nog comfortabel bij te voelen……

By the way, it was not the only thing creative I did with the colour purple this week. The 16 year old daughter of a friend had her first gala night in a magnificent strapless dress, in the colour purple…… Husband Jan reduce the dress from size 40 into size 36 and I went to their house with loads of make up to adjust the rest of the styling to this extraordinary colour. Wonderful, that fuzzing with make up and so. The Smokey Eyes  were a bit too much for the taste of the debutante, but the technique produced a beautiful effect and the curlers created a big curly amount of hair. Big Hair, also a trend of this moment but too much of a good thing for the girl to feel comfortable with……

Vandaag gaf ik een workshop van een volle zondag in De Afstap in Amsterdam. Wat is het toch heerlijk om in deze gezellige wolwinkel in hartje Amsterdam les te geven. Dit keer zaten er maar liefst vier ‘winkelmeisjes’ in de groep……

Hoewel ik eigenlijk helemaal niet lekker was, snotverkouden en vannacht nog wat koortsig, had ik me vast voorgenomen dat dit niet de reden mocht zijn dat de dag niet door kon gaan en dat is gelukt. En hoe! Wat een lol hebben we vandaag gehad! Vooral toen winkelmeisje J. het breiwerk van winkelmeisje M. spontaan uittrok omdat ze in de veronderstelling was dat deze rode Moebius die van haar was. Want ze was namelijk niet tevreden over het resultaat…… We hadden het kunnen weten dat deze twee ondeugende giebelende dames van, wat zullen we zeggen, ietwat middelbare leeftijd, stiekumpjes achterin ons lokaaltje kropen. Dat kon niet goed gaan. En zo zag Lonneke, die wat klusjes in de winkel deed, M. gillend van het lachen naar de WC rennen om erger te voorkomen! Heerlijk toch.

Today I did a full day workshop in De Afstap in Amsterdam. How good it is to teach in this cosy yarn shop in the centre of Amsterdam. This time we had no less than four ‘shop-girls’ in our group….

Despite the fact that I wasn’t feeling well at all, having a streaming cold and still some fever last night, I had decided that this could not be reason for cancelling this day and so the day was on. And how! What fun we had today! Especially when shop girl J. in Amsterdam. How good it is to teach in this cosy yarn shop in the centre of Amsterdam. This time we had no less than four ‘shop-girls’ in our group….Despite the fact that I wasn’t feeling well at all, having a streaming cold and still some fever last night, I had decided that this could not be reason for cancelling this day and so the day was on. And how! What fun we had today! Especially when shop girl J. spontaneously started to frog shop girl M.’s knitting because she thought this red moebius was hers. For she wasn’t satisfied with the result …. We could have known it when these two naughty giggling, let’s say middle aged, ladies, sneaked into the back of our classroom. They would be trouble. And that’s how Lonneke, who did some chores in the shop, saw M. running, screaming with laughter, to the toilet to prevent worse! Fun, isn’t it?

Winkelmeisje J. met zere duim en het zweet in haar handen zette zo strak op dat zij samen met de behulpzame Karin met grof geweld de rondbreinaald moest bevrijden.Ondanks de geweldige sfeer, het feit dat zelfs Inge (onze mede-SnB’er van iets boven de middelbare leeftijd zeg ik heel zachtjes) erbij was en de stamgasten die zelfs uit de buurt van Zwolle waren gekomen, is er toch flink doorgeploeterd. En zo zie je aan het eind van de dag de cursisten naar huis gaan, blij met wat ze geleerd hebben en onder de indruk van wat ze nu kunnen. Twee mooie Moebius-opzetten en diverse prachtige methodes om naadloos op te zetten met de rondbreinaald. ‘Toveren met een rondbreinaald’, we waren het er allemaal over eens; het is de perfecte titel voor deze workshop.

In gedachten zie ik jullie allemaal vanavond of van de week zitten op jullie bank met jullie breiwerk. Gut, hoe ging het ook alweer? Of fanatiek doorbreiend aan de Moebius? En zijn zelfs jullie huisgenoten en breivrienden nu onder de indruk van jullie getover met rondbreinaalden?

Ik ga ervoor zorgen dat de workshop ‘Zet ‘m op’ goed aansluit op de workshop ‘Toveren met een rondbreinaald’ door er een prachtige afkantingmethode voor de Moebius in op te nemen. Wij zitten al weer vol ideeën over wat we allemaal willen behandelen en kijken er al naar uit!

Winkelmeisje J. with her sore thumb and sweaty hands cast on so tight that she had to free her circular needle with brute force with the kind help of Karin. Despite this fabulous atmosphere, the fact that even Inge (our slightly above middle age (I whisper) co-SnB member) was there and our regulars who came from the area of Zwolle, everyone plodded away bravely. And that’s how at the end of the day the students left for home, glad with what they had learned and impressed with what they were able to do. They now master two methods of casting on a Moebius and several beautiful methods of casting on seamless with a circular needle. We all agreed, ‘Toveren met een rondbreinaald’ (‘Magical knitting with circular needles’) is the perfect title for this workshop.

In my mind I can see you all tonight or this week sitting on your couch with your knitting. Oh my, how was it done? Or fanatically knitting your Moebius? And are your housemates and knitting friends impressed by your magic with circular needles?

I am going to make sure that the workshop ‘Cast on’ will link up with the workshop ‘Magical knitting with circular needles’ by including a perfect cast-off method for the Moebius. We are already full of ideas of all the things we want to teach you and we are really looking forward to it!

Verleden jaar vroegen veel Stitch ‘n Bitch’ers om tijdens de tweede Stitch ‘n Bitch-Dag de kans te krijgen om hun eigen ontwerpen te showen. En ze wilden een wedstrijd. Dat kon. Op het podium liepen twaalf SnB’ers te pronken met hun creaties, waarna een deskundige jury én een publieksjury de winnaars kozen. Jean Moss reikte de hoofdprijs uit. In de jury zaten ook Kerstin Jönsson, Debbie Stoller en Evelien Verkerk. Ladyspeaker Jan ter Heide was helemaal in zijn element en deed het zo goed dat Arja hem vergaf dat hij haar Lodewijk stiekum in zijn colbertzakje meenam.

Corry haalde en passant maar liefst met haar o zo te grote vest bijna 100 euro op voor KiKa!

Last year a lot of Stitch ‘n Bitch’ers told us that they wanted the chance to show their knittings on the second Stitch ‘n Bitch-Dag. And they wanted a contest. That could be arranged. On the stage twelf SnB’ers showed off their creations and afterwards a professional and the audience choose winners. Jean Moss announced the overal winner. In the jury also took place Kerstin Jönsson, Debbie Stoller and Evelien Verkerk. Ladyspeaker Jan ter Heide was in his element and did his job so well that Arja forgave him that he sneeked Lodewijk home in the pocket of his colbert.

By the way, Corry collected almost 100 euro with her oh so big sweater for KiKa!

Met veel flair liep ook Brent mee om wantjes en een muts te laten zien aan het publiek. Zo werd ook meteen de trui die Jantine voor hem breide beroemd……..

A week later in Londen the SnB-Day UK also organised a fashion show. Here the knittings from the new book of Debbie Stoller Son of Stitch ‘n Bitch were shown. With flair Brent showed mittens and a hat to the public. And so the sweater knitted by Jantine became famous too……..

Sokken breien is in. De breiers die hun eerste sok breien lopen een grote kans om verslaafd te raken. Waarom? Je kan creativiteit prima kwijt in sokken breien, een sokkenbreiwerkje neem je zo makkelijk mee in je tas mee en zelfgebreide sokken zitten zo ontzettend lekker. De hiel en teen nodigen uit om nieuwe vormen te proberen. Top-down, Toe-up, de hiel later inzetten, alles kan. Cat Bordhi bracht recentelijk New Pathways uit. Een geweldig boek met innovatieve sokkenpatronen. Queen Kahuna bedacht haar heel eigen manier van sokkenbreien. En Nancy Bush blinkt uit in het herontdekken van sokkenpatronen van over de hele wereld.

Vroeger breide men ook al sokken. Veel sokken. In Londen kocht ik een paar weken geleden op een boekenbeurs al een paar juweeltjes van oude sokkenboekjes. Vandaag vielen er nog een paar in de bus. Destijds was er de economische noodzaak om sokken en kousen te breien. Toch lees je tussen de regels door dat ook toen de breiers plezier hadden in het sokken breien. Bedsokken waren er in vele soorten en maten. Decoratieve randen en patronen werden regelmatig toegepast. Meisjes droegen trots hun mooie zondagse kanten sokjes. En zakten je sokken af, nou, dan breide je er een paar sokophouders bij!

Knitting socks is hot. The knitters that knit their first sock are in danger of getting addicted. Why? You can be creative knitting socks, a sock you can take with you so easily and hand knitted socks are so nice to wear. The heel and toe invite you to try new shapes. Top-down, Toe-up, knit in the heel afterwards, anything is possible. Cat Bordhi recently published a book called New Pathways. A wonderful book with a lot of innovative sock patterns. Queen Kahuna made up her own way of knitting socks. And Nancy Bush is so good in reinventing sock patterns from all over the world.

In earlier days socks were knitted too. A lot of socks. In  London at a book fair I bought a few wonderful old sock books a few weeks ago. Today some were delivered to my home. Then there was an economical reason to knit socks and stockings. But you can read between the lines who much the knitters loved knitting their socks. Bed socks there were there in all kind of sorts and sizes. Decorative border and patterns were applied on a regular basis. Girls wore their Sunday lacy socks with pride. And when your socks dropped to your shoes, well, then you knitted yourself a pair of garters!
