Het boek Haapsalu Shawl is doorspekt met foto’s, beelden uit heden en verleden. We hadden dus al een voorstelling van het dorpje, maar de schoonheid van de dorpskern, het kasteel en met name de Proomenadi overtrof onze verwachtingen. Wie de rondleiding van Aime Edasi en Siiri Reimann krijgt, is helemaal een gelukkige breier. Na een heerlijke lunch in de plaatselijke lunchroom, liepen we met z’n allen door naar de dorpskern.
The book Haapsalu Shawl is filled with photos, images from the present and bygone days. So we already had an impression of this village, but the beauty of the town centre, the castle and mainly the Proomenadi exceeded all our expectations. Anyone receiving a guided tour by Aime Edasi and Siiri Reimann is an even happier knitter. After a delicious lunch in the local lunchroom we walked to the town centre together.

Allereerst lieten ze ons het museum zien waar de prachtige kanten shawls, proefjes, boeken enz liggen uitgestald. Hil en ik stortten ons eerst op de koopwaar, alles handgebreid, officiële Haapsalu-shawls, maar ook prachtige driehoekige shawls, wanten en sokken. Met tassen vol kwamen we aan in de museumruimte. Ongehoord, wat we daar gezien hebben. Je mag bij de meeste breisels heel dichtbij komen. Het boek van Linda Elgas mag je zelfs doorbladeren. En ondertussen breide de survaillante door aan haar shawl.
First of all they showed us the museum where the beautiful lace shawls, samples, books etc. are exhibited. Hil and I first of all dived into the merchandise, all of it hand-knitted, official Haapsalu shawls, but also beautiful triangular shawls, mittens and socks. With our bags loaded we arrived in the museum. What we saw there was really fabulous. You can get very close to most pieces of knitting and you can even leaf through Linda Elgas’ book. And in the meantime the curator continued knitting her shawl.

Dit was het moment dat Jans en Juul gezamenlijk de kuierlatten namen en later door Monika teruggevonden werden in het kasteel. Siiri wees ons daar op het raam waar de Witte Dame wel eens verschijnt. Nu verscheen ze even niet, maar ik kon me wel voorstellen dat de sprookjesachtige omgeving op de fantasie werkt en zag haar in gedachten al zweven, met een Haapsalu shawl om haar schouders…..
This was the moment Jans and Juul took their heels and were found later on at the castle by Monika. Siiri showed us a window at which every now and then the White Lady appears. She did not this time but I could image that these fairy-like surroundings make you fantasize and in my imagination I saw her floating around the castle wearing a Haapsalu shawl around her shoulders….
De Promenaadi, waar in de vorige eeuw de breisters hun waren breide en verkochten, wordt op dit moment opgeknapt. Maar zelfs in deze staat straalt de boulevard stijlvolle chique uit. In gedachten zie je de rijke Amerikaanse toeristen er rondlopen en de breikoopwaar bekijken. Het water, het oude hotel, de pilaren langs de waterkant, alles in Haapsalu is zoals ik hoopte dat het er nog zou zijn.
The Proomenaadi where in the previous century the knitters knitted their merchandise and sold it, is currently being renovated. But even in the current state the boulevard radiates a stylish chic. In your mind you can see the American tourists walking the boulevard and considering the knitted garments. The water, the old hotel, the pillars at the waterfront, everything in Haapsalu is as I hoped it would still be.

Na een gezellig etentje met uitzicht over de zee en in gezelschap van Rob, de man van Nelleke die zo lief op zijn vrouw wachtte toen ze de workshop deed, liepen we door het rustige dorpje in de richting het oude stationnetje, waar we aan het eind van de dag de bus naar Tallinn namen. We herkenden het station van de foto’s in het boek, een prachtige oase van rust en stijl. Vergane glorie, maar levend gehouden door de breisteken van breiers van toen en nu.
After a pleasant dinner in a restaurant with sea views and in the company of Rob, Nelleke’s husband who kindly waited for his wife to finish the workshop, we walked through the quiet village in the direction of the old railway station where we took the bus back to Tallinn at the end of the day. We recognized the station from the photos in the book, a beautiful oasis of tranquillity and style. Faded glory, but kept alive by the knitted stitches of the knitters of then and now.
