Life 'n Knitting

Dit jaar zijn er diverse evenementen met als onderwerp textiel in het hoge Noorden op het gebied van breien en textiele ambachten. Allemaal leuk, maar welke te kiezen?

In Viljandi is er van 13 tot 18 juli een week met workshop over Estlandse ambachten. Er zijn ook workshops over breien. Ik was er al twee keer eerder. Beide keren ging ik ook naar Olestvere, een geweldig complex rond een prachtig landhuis, waar je de mooiste ambachten kan leren.

Finland organiseert dit jaar het Nordic Knitting Symposium. Nadat Estland de eerste drie symposia had georganiseerd, zijn zij aan de beurt en ze pakken flink uit met een hele week workshops en activiteiten. Van 29 juni tm 5 juli kan je je hart ophalen.

En in Riga, daar is van 5 tm 7 juni een event geheel gewijd aan wanten. Kan het mooier? De Letse wanten zijn prachtig. Sinds het uitkomen van Latviesu Cimdi ben ik verkocht, ik wil daar beslist meer over weten. Ik wil daar dus best wel heen, reken maar. Het museum in Riga schijnt een enorme collectie wanten te herbergen. Misschien verder ook nog iets van het land zien… Wie wil daar nu niet heen hè…. 😉

This year there are several events in the far north in knitting and textile crafts. All nice, but which one to choose?

Viljandi is from 13 to 18 July, a week filled with workshop on Estonian handicrafts. There are also workshops on knitting. I was there twice before. Both times I went to Olestvere, which is  a great complex around with a beautiful country house, where you can learn all kind of crafts. 

This year Finland is organizing the Nordic Knitting Symposium. After Estonia had organized the first three symposia they take their  turn and organized a week of workshops and activities. From June 29 thru July 5 you can pick up your heart.

And in Riga, there is from 5 until 7 June, an event entirely dedicated to mittens. Can it be better? The Latvian mittens are beautiful. Since the release of Latviesu Cimdi I’m sold, I definitely want to know more about them. So I really want to go there. The museum in Riga seems to have a huge collection of mittens. Maybe see some more of the country. Who does not want to go there,  huh …. 😉

Estland, wat ben je toch leuk! Ik heb negen dagen genoten van de gastvrijheid, het lekkere eten, de cultuur en de prachtige breisels van dit vriendelijke landje. Dit keer waren de highlights de eilanden Saaremaa en Muhu, Haapsalu, de Sweater Conference in Viljandi, een bezoek aan uitgeverij Saara in Turi en natuurlijk Tallinn.

Estonia, such a wonderful country! Nine days of enjoying the hospitality, the nice food, the culture and the beautiful knitwear of this friendly country. This time the highlights were a visit to the islands Saaremaa and Muhu, Haapsalu, the Sweater Conference in Viljandi, a visit at publishing house Saara in Turi and of course Tallinn. 

Op maandag 13 mei arriveerden we op de luchthaven in Tallinn, waar onze huurauto’s klaar stonden waarmee we naar Saaremaa reden. Daar hadden we twee houten Estlandse huisjes waar Elsbeth heerlijke omeletjes voor ons bakte. En natuurlijk dinsdagavond lekker ouderwets gezellig naar het Songfestival kijken. Gezellig met ondertussen Jan en Monika in de chat…

Bloggen over een breireis en nog niets over breien, waar jullie vast allemaal benieuwd naar zijn… wacht maar af, we hebben de prachtigste dingen gezien. En ja, ik heb een koffer vol breigerelateerde spullen mee naar huis genomen. Ik zal jullie er alles over vertellen de komende weken.

On Monday 13 May we arrived at the airport of Tallinn, where we stepped in our rental cars and drove to Saarema. There we had rented two wooden Estonian cottages where Elsbeht baked us delicious omelets. On Tuesday night of course we watched together the Songfestival as that is the tradition. While chatting with Jan and Monika…

Blogging about a knitting journey and not mentioning knitting which you all look forward too… be patient please, we have seen the most amazing things. And yes, I also brought a suitcase stuffed with knitting related items back home. I will tell you all about it the coming weeks.

Ik ben verliefd… al een poosje en het zit diep. Het onderwerp van mijn liefde is de Baltische staat Estland. Het artikel dat ik schreef voor The Knitter 55 gaat over de breikunst in Estland, over de kleuren, de ervaren en getalenteerde breiers en het mooie Tallinn. Hmm, zou zo weer terug willen…

I’m in love … for quite a while now and it runs deep. The subject of my love is the Baltic state of Estonia. The article I wrote for The Knitter 55 is about the art of knitting in Estonia, the colors, the experienced and talented knitters and beautiful Tallinn. Hmm, would like to be back there…

Van donderdag 14 tm zondag 17 februari is het weer Handwerkbeurs en wij, The Dutch Knitters, zijn erbij! We zullen er vier dagen lustig op los twijnend breien, zodat jij kan zien hoe dat gaat. Natuurlijk slepen we allerlei breisels in deze techniek, boeken en wanten uit Warme Handen mee. Kom vooral even langs!

From Thursday 14 till Sunday 17 February the Handwerkbeurs will be held in Zwolle and we, The Dutch Knitters, will be there too! We will knit twined all four days, so you can see with your own eyes how this is done. Of course we will bring a huge pile of knitwear in twined knitting technique, books an mittens from Warm Hands along. We hope to see you there! 

Na vijf reizen naar Estland in krap 3 jaar kun je rustig stellen dat je het daar leuk vindt. Erg leuk. Het begon met de interesse in de breikunst, maar zo langzamerhand verbreedt de belangstelling zich naar andere textiele kunsten, ambachten en de cultuur van het land. Er zijn nog veel meer liefhebbers van het Baltisch gebied, en sommige schrijven daar ook nog graag over. Zo ook de mensen achter het Baltisch Dagboek. Journalist Harm bracht een paar gezellige uurtjes met ons door, werd volledig ingewijd in de wereld van het breien en vertrok met ons boek Warme Handen onder zijn arm. Hij schreef over ons enthousiasme voor de Estlandse breikunst, Warme Handen en onze reizen naar Estland een mooi artikel over in Baltisch Dagboek 4. Wij staan in deel 2 vanaf pagina 58, maar de rest van het tijdschrift is zeker ook de moeite waard. En gratis… Veel plezier!

After five trips to Estonia in just under three years you can safely say that you like it there, very much so. It started with the interest in the art of knitting, but gradually it broadened to other textile arts and crafts and the country’s culture. Of course there are more people who love the Baltic States and some like to write about them as well, as is the case with the people of the Baltisch Dagboek (Baltic Diary). Journalist Harm spend a few pleasant hours with us, was immersed in the world of knitting and left with our book Warm Hands tucked under his arm. He wrote a nice article about our enthusiasm for the Estonian art of knitting, Warm Hands and our travels to Estonia in Baltisch Dagboek 4. We are in part 2 from page 58 onwards, but the rest of the magazine is very worthwhile as well. And free… Enjoy it!

Estlandse wanten zijn prachtig, maar Letse wanten mogen er ook zijn. Daar kom ik steeds meer achter en nu na het verschijnen van Latvieša Cimdi van Maruta Grasmane ben ik helemaal om. Wat een práchtboek, tjokvol foto’s van wanten met daarnaast het volledige patroon. Gelukkig staat achterin het boek een Engelse samenvatting over de geschiedenis, symbolen en de culturele en breitechnische verschillen tussen de  regio’s. Want ik weet niet hoe jouw Lets is, maar ik vind Ests al een drama en Lets helemaal onbegrijpelijk. Het is echter geen enkel beletsel dit boek te willen hebben, door de meer dan 400 pagina’s te bladeren en er wanten uit te breien. Als een kind zo blij ben ik ermee. Kijk maar even naar deze video en jij wil ‘m ook. En weet je wat nu zo leuk is, binnenkort ligt het boek ook bij de Afstap! Dank je Monika, voor de tip!

Estonian mittens are beautiful, but the Latvian mittens are certainly worth appreciation too. That is what find out more and more, especially after the publication of Latvieša Cimdi written by Maruta Grasmane. What a wonderful book, filled to the rim with photos of mittens with the complete pattern next to it. Fortunately a English summary about the history, symbolism and different cultural and differences in techniques related to knitting between regions is added to the book. I don’t know if you speak Latvian fluently, but I think Estonian is dramatically difficult and Latvian even worse. So this is not a reason not to want this book, to browse throught the 400-plus pages and knit mittens from it. As a child so happy I’m with it. Look at this video and you want this book too. And fortunately we will soon have it at the Afstap! Thank you Monika, for the hint!

Sinds ik bijna van mijn stoel viel van verrassing toen Monika mij een boek van Linda Elgas cadeau gaf, noemen wij een moment van diepe blijdschap bij het krijgen van een speciaal cadeau een ‘Linda Elgas-moment’. Het begerenswaardige boek met kantpatronen voor Haapsalu-shawls is erg moeilijk te vinden en ik had eigenlijk de hoop al opgegeven. Monika waarschuwde me al van te voren dat er weer zo’n momentje aan zou komen toen ze aankondigde dat ze me een kerstcadeau had gestuurd. Niets was minder waar… in mijn brievenbus viel een pakketje met het prachtige boek Noppeid Kihnu Näputoööst van Ingrid Uus. Een prachtige verzameling van handwerken van Kihnu, het mooie eilandje ten zuidwesten van Estland, dat we in 2011 bezochten. En eilandje met pakweg 500 bewoners die maken wat hun ogen zien. Beschrijvingen van borduur-, naai-, haak- en breiwerk vind je in dit boek, gelukkig met veel teltekeningen en foto’s, zodat zelfs als je geen Ests kan lezen, alles kan maken wat je ogen zien in dit geweldige boek.

Since I almost fell of my chair from sheer happiness when Monika gave me Linda Elgas’ book as a present, we call a moment of great joy when you get a special present a ‘Linda Elgas moment’. The desirable book with lace patterns for Haapsalu shawls is very hard to find and I had almost no hope left ever to find me a copy.  Monika already told me that such a special moment might come again when she announced that she had send me a Christmas present. That was só true! On my doormat fell a package with the wonderful book Noppeid Kihnu Näputoööst written by Ingrid Uus. A gathering of crafts from Kihnu, the beautiful island South-West of Estonia, that we have visited in 2011. An island with approx. 500 inhabitants who are able to make whatever they want. Descriptions from embroidery, sewing, crochet and knitting are in the book, fortunately with lots of charts and photos, so even if you can’t read Estonian language, you can also make whatever you want. 

Raadt eens waar ik de afgelopen week was? In Tallinn om Mardilaat te bezoeken, Jan ‘mijn’ Tallinn te laten zien en natuurlijk om Monika te ontmoeten. Mardilaat was weer gewéldig. De beurs wordt ieder jaar georganiseerd door de Estonian Folk Art and Craft Union ter gelegenheid van Sint Maarten. Verleden jaar was ik uitgenodigd om er Warme Handen te introduceren. Een hal vol met handwerk, prachtige materialen, traditioneel uitgedoste mensen, allerlei geuren, kleuren en overal ontdek je wat. Jan ging zelfs twee dagen en ik drie van de vier dat de beurs dit jaar duurde. Zo had ik dit jaar genoeg tijd om ook wat workshops te doen. Ik zal jullie daar in een volgend blog meer over vertellen en wat plaatjes van laten zien. Even geduld nog…

Guess where I spent last week!  In Tallinn to visit Mardilaat, to show Jan ‘my’ Tallinn and of course, to meet Monika. Mardilaat was great fun. The fair is organised by the Estonian Folk Art and Craft Union every year to honour Saint Martin’s Day. Last year I was invited to introduce Warm Hands. A hall filled with crafts, beautiful materials, traditionally dressed people, a kind of smells, colour and so much to discover. Jan went two days and I even three of the four days. So I had enough time to do some workshops. I will tell you more about that soon and show you some pictures. Patience please…

Wie met de echte authentiek garens van Aade Lõng uit Estland onze wanten en polswarmers uit Warme Handen wil breien, moest tot nog toe een aantal gigantische strengen afnemen, zodat een paar wanten soms wel tegen de 800 gram garen kostte. Maar dan kon je ook wel je hele familie in van wanten in dié kleuren voorzien, want je had pakweg acht à tien keer zoveel garen als nodig voor één paar. If you wanted to knit mittens from Warm Hands with the authentic Estonian yarn from Aade Lõng, had to buy gigantic amounts of yarn in whole skeins, so for a pair of mittens you sometimes need almost 800 grams. But then you could knit mittens in these specific colours for the whole family, as you have eight to ten times as much yarn as needed for one pair of mittens. Meestal vind ik gordijnen maar stoffige dingen, maar deze zijn anders. Ieder deel heeft ingeweven geometrische figuren, maar dichtgeschoven vormen ze samen een Estlands breimotief. Hoe verzìn je het hè. Ze zijn te bewonderen in het restaurant in Viljandi, waar we met uitzicht over de vallei heerlijk gegeten hebben.

I think most curtains are dusty collectors, but these are different. Every part has its own woven in geometrical figures, but put them together and you see an Estonian knitting motif. Its pure genius! You can find them in the restaurant in Viljandie, where we had a lovely dinner with a view on the valley. 

Ik kocht er bij de receptie superdicht gebreide wanten, gemaakt door een student van de handwerkopleiding in Viljandi. De receptioniste legde even haar eigen breiwerk neer om ze af te rekenen. ‘s Avonds troffen we haar weer in haar kantoortje met de prachtige gordijnen, weer druk met haar breiwerk. Zou haar baas aan haar hebben gevraagd wat voor gordijnen ze daar wilde en zei ze toch: “Ach, doe maar breigordijnen…”.

I bought very tightly knitted mittens at the reception desk. They were made by a student of the crafts educational center in Viljandi. The woman at the reception just put the knitting that she was working on the desk while she sold them to me. Lateron that evening we saw her knitting in her office room with the beautiful curtains. I wondered, her boss might have asked her what kind of curtains she liked before ordering them. Maybe she just said: “Well, knitting curtains would be lovely…”.

Je loopt nietsvermoedend de Estonian Handicraft House met kelderwinkel van Riini Tomberg in Pikk-straat in Tallinn in en wat zie je daar in de boekenkast? Warme Handen! Wat is het ongeloof lijk leuk om ons eigen boek tegen te komen in het buitenland. De verkoopster keek eens Daphne, naar ons boek en toen naar Daphne en had al snel door dat niet alleen de auteurs maar ook het covermodel zich in haar winkel bevond. Giebelend breide ze toen maar door aan haar sok. Niet alleen daar vonden we ons boek, maar ook toen we nog een andere Eesti Kasitöö (winkel met handwerk en handwerkartikelen)  inliepen. Daar lag het bij de spulletjes van Monika, haar mooie garens en de Haapsula shawl, zo genoemd omdat ik Haapsalu altijd Haapsula noem. Dat krijg ik er nu helemaal nooit meer uit.

Unsuspectingly you walk into the Estonian Handicraft House  with  Riini Tomberg’s shop in the cellar in Pikk Street in Tallinn and what do you see in the bookcase? Warm Hands! What fun it is to come across our own book abroad. The sales lady looked at Daphne, our book and then again at Daphne and she soon realised that not only the authors of the book but also the cover model was in her shop. While giggling she continued knitting her sock. Not only in that shop we came across our book but also in another Eesti Käsitöö (a shop with crafts and crafts materials). There it was lying with Monika´s stuff, her beautiful yarns and the Haapsula shawl, which is has that name because I always say Haapsula instead of Haapsalu. I won’t ever get rid of it now.

Bij Emma Leppermann in Masters Courtyard, die een prachtige gebreide fiets voor de deur heeft staan, vonden Monika’s zelfgesponnen armbandjes. Ze hebben daar prachtig stijlvol design, maar ik wilde de fiets en die paste helaas niet in de koffer. Een andere breifiets vond ik in een winkeltje in Pikk-straat. Ook daar design met de typisch nieuwe Estlandse slag, moderne vormen, praktische voorwerpen maar met respect voor de folklore en handwerktradities van het land.

Tijdens de conferentie in Tartu verkocht Monika Warme Handen en zette ze bij haar foto ook haar handtekening om de koper te verrassen met een uniek exemplaar van ons boek. Ook in de bibliotheek van het Heimtali museum lag een exemplaar van Warme Handen tussen de prachtige oude Estlandse breiboeken. Wie had dat kunnen denken…

At Emma Leppermann´s in Masters Courtyard, where a beautifully knit bicycle adorns the entrance of the shop, we found Monika´s homespun bracelets. They have such stylish design over there, nevertheless I wanted the bike but unfortunately that did not fit into my suitcase. I found another knitted bycicle in a shop in Pikk Street. There they had design objects in the typically new Estonian style, modern shapes, practicle objects but with respect for the folkore and crafts traditions of this country.

During the conference in Tartu Monika sold Warm Hands and signed her photo in there to surprise the buyer with a unique copy of our book. The Heimtali Museum library also contained a copy of our book and it was placed between the beautiful old Estonian knitting books. Who would have thought that….

So… Warm Hands is for sale in several käsitöös in Tallinn, but also through The Dutch Knitters´ website and in many yarn shops.

De conferentie over klederdrachten was de aanleiding om dit jaar in september naar Estland te gaan. Wie van breien houdt, is vaak ook algemeen geïnteresseerd in textiel en kledingtradities. Bovendien was er behoorlijk wat over breien bij. Hoe kouder het land, hoe meer breitradities, lijkt wel. Dus daar zaten we, koptelefoons met simultane vertaling op en breiwerk in de aanslag. De Esten zijn meesters in het organiseren van dit soort evenementen. Alles precies op tijd en keurig verzorgd. Daar kunnen wij Nederlanders nog wat van leren!

The conference about traditional costumes was the reason to go to Estonia in September of this year. If you love knitting, you are often also generally interested in textile and the history of costumes. And there was quite some attention for knitting as well. The colder the country is, the more of a knitting tradition it has, it seems. So there we were, headphones with simultaneous translation on and ready to start knitting. The Estonians are masters in organizing such events. Everything was according to schedule and perfectly organized. We Dutch could learn a thing or two from them!

In de halfduistere zaal van de universiteit van Tartu lieten we alle informatie lekker over ons heen komen en breide ondertussen nog een toertje. ‘s Middags waren er workshops, onder andere Kihnu-tasjes naaien, waar een aantal van ons aan meededen. Titia en Daphne tonen trots de resultaten.

In the dimly lighted room of Tartu University we let all information wash over us and in the meantime knitted another row. In the afternoon there were workshops, among which one about making Kihnu bags and a couple of us attended. Titia and Daphne proudly showed us the results.

De ontmoeting met Aino Praakli en het aanbieden van ons boek Warme Handen aan haar, was voor ons de kers op de taart. Aino is auteur van diverse boeken over Estlandse wanten. Geweldig om deze beroemde breister die zo’n grote invloed heeft gehad om de inhoud van ons boek, te ontmoeten. Aino ging ook mee naar Seto de volgende dag, later dus nog meer over haar en haar prachtige boeken.

Meeting Aino Praakli and offering her our book Warm Hands, was the icing on the cake for us. Aino is the author of several books on Estonian mittens. It was marvellous to meet this famous knitter who had such an influence on the contents of our book. Aino also went to Seto the next day, so later on more about her and her beautiful books.

Waar moet ik beginnen met bloggen nu ik zo’n gewèldige reis achter de rug hebt? Bij mijn mooiste souvenier dan maar. Dat zijn de geornamenteerde handschoenen, gebreid en geborduurd door Kristi Jõeste. Ik kocht ze in het huisatelier van Anu Raud. Anu, een vriendelijke oudere dame die prachtige wandkleden en breisels maakt en vooral bekend is vanwege haar gebreide handpoppen en dieren, had nog twee paartjes te koop. Ze waren niet goedkoop voor Estlandse begrippen, maar voor de originele exemplaren uit een van mijn geliefste boeken, had ik dat wel over. We wisten van te voren dat we Anu zouden ontmoeten, dus kwamen niet met lege handen. De verraste Anu liet zich lekker verwennen met al die pakjes die ze naar Hollandse gewoonte direct uit moest pakken van ons en liet meteen appeltjes aanrukken uit eigen tuin. Lekker fris zuur en verser kan niet.

What to start with in my blog now that I have been on such a fantastic journey? With the most beautiful souvenir, I guess. The ornamented gloves, knitted and embroidered by Kristi Jõeste. I bought them in Anu Raud‘s workshop at her home. Anu, a very friendly elderly lady who makes beautiful tapestries and knitted items and is especially famous for her knitted puppets and animals, had only two pairs left. The Estonians consider them to be quite expensive, but for the original specimens from one of the books I love most, I was willing to pay the price. We knew in advance that we were going to meet Anu, so we didn’t come empty-handed. A very surprised Anu was pampered with all the gifts that she had to unwrap immediately, as is the Dutch custom. And she let someone bring apples from her own garden. Very nice tart apples and they were as fresh as you could get them.

Ik koos de kleurige geborduurde handschoenen. Deze handschoenen staan in het boek Ornamented Journey van Kristi Jõeste en Kristina Ehin. Het ontwerp is gebaseerd op een paar oude handschoenen uit de gemeente Kolga-Jaani Soosaare, om precies te zijn de Purtsi boerderij. De breister die destijds de handschoenen breide die nu in het Eesti Rahva Muuseum te vinden zijn onder nr 14160, is inmiddels circa 82 jaar oud. Ze gebruikte 50 jaar geleden bij het breien een nog veel ouder voorbeeld, maar toch ogen mijn handschoenen draagbaar en modern. Ik vind ze zó mooi.

I choose the colourful embroidered gloves. These gloves are in the book Ornamented Journey by Kristi Jõeste en Kristina Ehin. The design is based on a pair of old gloves from the county of Kolga-Soosaare, to be precise from the Purtsi farm. The knitter that made the gloves, which can be found in the Eesti Rahva Muuseum under no 14160, in those days is now 82 years old. Fifty years ago she used an even much older example while knitting, but still my gloves look very wearable and modern. I really love them!

Een paar weken geleden lag er in mijn brievenbus een pakketje van Monika. Ze had me al enthousiast verteld over het boek dat Kristi Jõeste (één van de beste wantenbreiers van Estland!) zou gaan uitbrengen en mijn verwachtingen waren dan ook hoog gespannen. Dit boek is echter nog mooier dan verwacht! Het bevat stijlvolle foto’s van de mooie, heel fijn gebreide wanten en handschoenen, patroontjes van de motieven en verhalen van Kristiina Ehin over de breikunst uit Estland. Gelukkig is er meteen al een Engelstalige versie. En mijn boek is, dankzij Monika die betrokken was bij de introductie van het boek in Tartu, gesigneerd door de beide auteurs!

A few weeks ago a package send to me by Monika arrived. She already told me enthousiasticly about the book Kristi Jõeste (one of the very best mitten knitters in Estonia!) would publish, so my expectations were high. This book thought was even better as expected! It is filled with stylish photos of beautiful, very fine knitted mittens and gloves, pattterns of the motifs and stories by Kristiina Ehin about the art of knitting in Estonia. Fortunately the English version is published at the same time as the Estonian version. And my book is, thanks to Monika who was involved with the introduction of the book in Tartu, signed by both authers!

Ik ontmoette Kristi op Mardilaat in november 2011 toen ik daar op deze handwerkbeurs het boek Warme Handen introduceerde. Kristi is écht heel goed en gedreven als het om wanten en handschoenen breien gaat en ik hoop dan ook nog eens les van haar te krijgen. Wie weet…
Tot dit tijd kan ik los met dit boek, want er staat een hoofdstuk in met instructies over hoe je de wanten en handschoenen op superdunne naalden kan breien. De Estlanders leren op school al breien, dus er staan geen complete patronen in het boek en zelfs de instructies zijn in onze ogen niet al te uitvoerig. Zij redden het daarmee wel, maar wij kunnen beter eerst eens op iets dikkere pennen een paar wanten naar een volledig patroon breien om er een beetje in te komen. Warme Handen, in het najaar gepubliceerd over dit onderwerp, bevat heel geschikte oefenprojecten met teltekeningen en veel uitleg over de technieken en patronen.

I met Kristi on Mardilaat in November 2011 when I introduced the book Warm Hands on this crafts fair. Kristi is really very good and a real professional when mittens are concerned, so I hope that one day I can follow a workshop given by her. Who knows…
Until then I can practise with this book, as it contains a chapter with instructions on how to knit mittens and gloves on super thin neeldes. The Estonians learn how to knit in school, so there are not complete patterns in the book and even the instructions are not too elaborate in our opinion. They can manage with these minimal instructions, but we can better first practicse with larger needles and complete patterns to get the hang of it. Warm Hands, published last autumn about this subject, has a lot of very well suited projects for this cause with charts and a lot of explanations on techniques and patterns.

Beter laat dan nooit, dit blog over de Breidagen van 13 en 14 april. Er kwamen te veel leuke uitjes en feestjes tussen, dus het blogklusje bleef even liggen. Maar nu heb ik eindelijk de tijd om jullie uitgebreid verslag te doen. Want wat was het leuk hè!

Better late as never, this blog about the Breidagen on 13 and 14 April. There were so many nice things and parties in my life, so I got behind with blogging. But now I finally found time to make an extensive review. We had so much fun!

Vrijdag gaf ik geen workshops, dus kon ik de hele dag lekker op de beurs rondlopen. Wat leuk om iedereen weer te zien, leuke spullen te kopen en foto’s te maken van allemaal blije breiers. De hal was volgepropt met standjes van de beste handelaren die hun mooiste waar hadden meegenomen. Eén groot breifeest!

Friday I didn’t give workshops, so I had all day to spend on the fair. It was so good to meet friends, buy stuff and make photos of all these happy knitters. The hall was stuffed with stands of the best merchants who all brought their nicest merchandize. One big knitting party!

Zaterdag gaven we twee workshops over ons stokpaardje, de Estlandse breikunst. ‘s Ochtends over Estlands kant – Haapsalu shawls en ‘s middags Warme Handen, de technieken uit ons boek over Estlandse wanten en polswarmers. Twee keer een volle bak, dat vinden we heerlijk. Aan het eind van de dag nog even met ons stapeltje Ysolda-boeken naar Ysolda voor handtekeningen. Ja, ik heb ze állemaal. En om Ysolda óns boek aan te bieden.

Saterday we gave two workshops about Estonian knitting, the knitting culture we love to teach. In the morning about Estonian lace (Haapsalu shawls) and in the afternoon Warm Hands, the techniques of our book about Estonian mittens and wrist warmers. Both classes were fully booked, which we loved to teach. At the end of the day we took our Ysolda-books to have them signed by the author. Yep, I own them all. And to offer Ysolda our book.
